Phil,
I been aroung this board for sometime and know you have a ton of experience with tapering. I have successful stopped my hydro use but started using darvon as a way to taper of the *****. Could you help me develop a schedule? It would be much appreciated. I can provide more details if you are ok with helping just let me know what information is important.
Thanks in advance.

I'm so sorry I didn't see this earlier.
I may be able to help with a taper schedule.
Let me know what kind of pills you were taking, like was it hydro or oxy or..... and how strong (5 or 7.5 or 10mg)
How often and what quantities did you take? Like was it 4 pills twice a day or 7 pills 3 times a day? Did you take the pills on a regular even schedule or uneven (randomly)
That will help getting a taper plan established. We may need to broaden the info you provide but that’s a start.
Hopefully I can help you
thanks for asking

Thanks so much for the reply Philster. I am not taking the hydros any more it is Darvon. A narcotic painkiller that isn't as strong as Hydro but just as addicting. I have no desire to go back to hydro use, at the end they made me so sick to my stomach that I couldn't even tolerate them for more than a day or two. I couldn't keep anything down and was so nauseous. I am thankful for that because it makes them completely undersirable. The darvon doesn't make me sick at all which is probably why I am having trouble making the leap to quit. Anyway...I take Darvon 65mgs in the following doses: 3 in the morning, 3 at lunch, 3 at dinner and 2 before bedtime. Sometimes I might take 2 here and there but not more then once a day. I know this has got to stop and want to try a taper. I think it maybe possible. I quit hydros a ton of times so I have a lot of experience with withdrawls. Any suggestions?

OK Ms KOG;
Darvon is the mild form of pain meds which is good. I would try and reduce by 10% every 5 days, that way you won't hurt yourself with withdrawal symptoms. So to do a real formal plan would be difficult but we can do a pseudo plan by just reducing 10% every 5 days. Not sure what mg Darvon pills are but lets say 65mgs is equal 13 of the 5 mg pills. If that the care I would just say instead of taking 3 at lunch only take 2, then 5 days later instead of 3 at dinner only take 2, that way you are taking 3 in the morning, 2 at lunch, 2 at dinner and 2 at beddy bye time. That way you are at 45 mgs per day and dropping quickly. It may seem slow but its has to be a bit regulated to diminish the withdrawal symptoms, thus why we taper ha.
You are so close, hang in there and focus on your goal. You can do this, at least get to goal and give it time to succeed. In the end I think you will be so gratified and proud of yourself for your accomplishment. I know I was.

Hi There KOG and Philster!!!
Sorry for just jumping in, i just wanted to say that I, too, also have written out tapers for several people. I also do the taper schedule exactly the same as Philster, however, I just wanted to say that i will often tell people that if dropping the 1 pill is too much then drop by 1/2 pill each time instead.
For example, Philster wrote to drop from 3 pills at lunch to 2,...... if this is a bit much then try dropping to 2 1/2 instead.
Yes, the taper is slow, BUT..... as someone else once said....you didnt just get to the amount you are on overnight... so it too will take time to go back down.
Good luck to you KOG!!!!!

Thanks for the feedback guys. It is interesting because I always thought that darvon was pretty mild and back in my hydro using days would only use it to keep withdrawl at bay or get through until another refill became available. But now that I have been on the darvon for several months I feel differently. I tried to cold turkey it and the withdrawl were horrible, just as bad as with hyrdro. I think when you have abused opiates on and off for so long that the withdrawl is horrible no matter what you are on. It's like your body had adjusted so much to the constant flow of opiods in your system. I was really hoping that this detox would be no big deal but I was wrong.
Has anyone else had this same experience from long term opiate, use your detox gets progressive worse no matter what the strength of the drug you are on? This sucks because I thought I was headed in a better direction.
Anyway...any suggestions people have I would welcome. I need all the help I can get.

Good to see the ol' team back here...Glorygurl has great tapering advice for you KOG... Like I said in the past- can you transition over to Darvocet for the remainder of your taper? The length of time you've been on there affects the receptors the same, therefore your WDS are the same as any other form of opiate.
I believe Darvon and Darvocet is a synthetic opiod...propoxyphene-
Structurally, it's a relative of the synthetic narcotic, methadone. Check out the life span of propoxyphene which will tell you how long your WDs will last and for a proper taper schedule based on the life span of the propoxyphene.
Can you DR help you out ? You will need other comfort meds for a detox if you decide to CT instead of tapering. I know tapering is difficult to do and painful as well...
Take care
