A judge ruled Friday that a 16-year-old boy fighting to use alternative treatment for his cancer must report to a hospital by Tuesday and accept treatment that doctors deem necessary, the family's attorney said. The judge also found that Starchild Abraham Cherrix's parents were neglectful for allowing him to pursue alternative treatment of a sugar-free, organic diet and herbal supplements supervised by a clinic in Mexico, lawyer John Stepanovich said.

That is sick! That is ridiculous. The state shouldnt decide what treatment you want. Heck,id try the herbal one too..

I think the fact that he was 16 is probably what swayed them - I don't know the law on when you can make your own choices though with regards to healthcare

If you read the story, the boy went through three months of conventional chemotherapy and then found out several months later that the tumor had grown back. He is not deciding on alternative treatment alone either, his parents want him to try it too.
The courts became involved when they became aware his family was taking the boy to an alternative treatment clinic.
Don't be so quick to discount alternative treatment. IV Vitamin C is being seriously studied right now by the National Institute of Health. There have been documented cases where cancer patients have chosen IV vitamin C as their only form of treatment and had results far better then conventional chemotherapy with no side effects. These same patients had also tried conventional cancer treatments prior.

Did not get to read the rest of the story as they deleted it but as a caregiver of a Stage IV NSCLC( lung cancer) patient that is currently a 2 yr survivor (that never smoked a day in her life) it angers me that the government had any say in the matter. Diet can make a BIG difference in cancer and the book Beating Cancer With Nutrition is a great read for anyone battling cancer.

Those of you that pooey alternative treatment need to look at the facts. The drug companies make Billions of dollars each year on cancer treatment, yet in alot of cases they can not cure the cancer... can they? If they could cure cancer they would loose billions of dollars as the profit is much better trying to manage any disease as a chronic condition instead of curing it. Stop and think about it .The drug companies control alot of things and the government and FDA support them and back them and we tend to put blind faith in them.

If I discovered that eating red and yellow M&M's together cured cancer and cured hundreds of people you can bet the drug companies would see to it that the FDA and government call me a quack and ran me out of town.This happens alot to alternative treatments because who would suffer if what I discovered was true.... THE DRUG COMPANIES! Wake up people Money is what matters most as there would be a huge trickle down effect.. think about it.


My mom is on her 4th line of cancer treatment...will the chemo cure her.NO but it has bought her time. The drug Tarceva ( biological drug ) has bought her the most and when it quit working we asked about the similar drug that was out first Irressa. Irressa was removed from the market as they claimed it really did not work! Yet I have met people that had taken it and been stable or in some cases cancer free for 3 -4 years. What really happened was not enough people benefitted from it so the drug comapny did not make all the money they felt intitled too so they did more clinical trials that showed it did not work so they could pull it from the market.

If they had tested the people for those that show potential for responding and put only those people in the study the results would have been great but they wanted to show the opposite so they could remove the drug from the market so they gave it to people they knew would not respond as it really is a small percentage that do respond to it.The end results are screw those that were taking it and seeing results. Clinical trials can be stacked to see the results they want as the whole drug testing system is a bit screwed up.

Can alternative treatments cure cancer it probably depends on which ones you are talking about but I feel in some cases it can do as well as chemo in holding it off. We asked my mom's oncologist about Vitamin C or Ozone theraphy and he laughed and said," NO NO NO those could make you sick, could kill you and probably will not work" My reply was "oh you mean they are just like Chemo!" As chemo does those things too!

Without building up our immune system we will not cure many cancers as that is the secret I think.Given the right stuff our bodies can cure alot of disease but instead we destroy the immune system thus removing that ability for our body. The human body is an amazing thing too bad we threw away the owners manuel for the drug campanies profit! Ok enough venting for me but the blind faith people put in FDA approved drugs makes me nuts!

My daughter-inlaws mother had mouth cancer, had to have most of her tongue removed and a flap of skin was used as a replacement, when the doctor told them that she would have to have chemo, her husband asked if they could guarantee that it would work, the doctor at University of Minnesota, said he couldn't, as science really doesn't know if chemo works or not, but he recommended doing it anyway.

The update to this story is that Abraham has won his case in court and can continue with alternative treatment for his cancer as long as it is being overseen by his medical doctor.

Late last week, two Virginia lawmakers announced plans to introduce legislation that would allow families broader power in managing the healthcare of their children. It will be proposed as "Abraham's Law" after Abraham Cherrix.

Let's hope it gets passed.

Virginia Delegate, John Welch III told the Associated Press that the Cherrix family had no history of abuse or neglect. On the contrary, Abraham's parents are fiercely devoted to their son, and have fully dedicated the family's resources to helping him get well.

Delegate Welch: "There was no reason for Social Services to get involved - no reason for the medical community to try to take over parental rights."

Virginia Senator Nick Rerras, who plans to introduce a similar bill, told the AP that it's not right to force families into court because they choose medicine "that is not popular or well known or practiced by local physicians."

Many people think somewhere in the world there might be a cure for cancer. The thing most people are unaware of is that there are not treatments alone but SEVERAL actual cures for cancer that have been known for a long time. They are natural sources that exist that people out in Asia, and in Europe have been using forever. They can get away with it more in those areas cause they don't have FDA and the U.S. pharmacuetical company breathing down their throats like guard dogs. There is even a natural cure for AIDS. These things exist and have existed for a long time. Just have to ignore the medical community, and do your own research and look.

Janmarie2, you said everything so perfectly and exactly how i feel. I'm glad i found this alternative section as im not having a very good response to my alternative ideas in the cancer board.

i wonder if people will wise up to these facts within my liftime...hopfully in my children's liftime there will be a dramatic change of how we look at our "healthcare" system.

Mr. Natural, I would like to know which cures for cancer you aer refering to. I am doing research into a book called "The Cure For All Cancers" by Hulda Clark. have you researched her theory on parasites at all? i feel ssooo much better after doing the parasite cleanse, but have not gotten a test yet to see if it has helped my early starges of cancer.

I don't have cancer, and no one close to me has cancer, that I know of, but it absolutely makes my blood boil that alternative methods are taken to court. Everyone has pretty much already said most of what I want to say, but I just wanted to chime in. I have recently started to switch to as many organic foods as I can (unfirtunately I don't have a high enough income to go completely organic) and I try to use natural and organic cleaning products around my house. My Fiance and I recently got a puppy and were reading up on the links between pet food and cancer. Our pets now only eat holistic, natural foods, and their coats are like baby bunnies. But you think about what goes into all the food that we eat. Luckily it is becoming more main stream, but I am just afriad the FDA is going to start to "regulate" it as unsafe or some bs like that. It si my belief that the FDA and the Big Bad Drug Comapnies are in it together.

This isnt directly related, but is close, is I was also just reading an article about links between childhood vaccines and autism. You are required by law to vaccinate your children, and if someone finds out you didnt or dont, they accuse you of neglect and take your kids away......its pretty damn scary...............
