My doc has me on norco 10/325 and 4mg delaudid for breakthrough... for some reason the delaudid makes me so incredibly hungry!! I feel like I haven't eaten in days.:dizzy: A couple of times I went to the ER for my back pain and they gave me a shot of delaudid, and I had the same reaction. The second time I got the shot in the ER (I've only gotten it twice, it was a intra muscular shot) it happened again, my husband was laughing because my stomach was rumbling so loud.... I asked the nurse if it was a typical side effect of the med and she said no, not at all. Even after I eat I'm STILL starving!! Anyone else get this at all? I've mentioned it to some people, and they think that the pain was suppressing my appetite and when the pain was relieved, my appetite came back. I don't know....

hey Mystic, stomach cramping or the feeling that you need to eat to settle you stomache sounds more like a side effect of taking a more potent opiate. All opiates call your bowels to slow down and cause constipation, this is from a diect effect on the bowels, The sensation of hunger is the way your brain responds to whats happening in your stomach, like cramping or grumbling or nausea. There are some stomach meds that won't interere with abosrption of short acting meds but you still want to satay away from meds that coat the stomach whcih prevents absorption. Zantac or pepcid or something prescribed may calm your stomach if it becomes a bigger issue.
For now I would just say be aware of what you eat. There is no reason you should have to gain unwanted weight because you need something to settle your stomach. If you take it with milk or food, it's less likely to cause those sensation or you can use something like baked Rits if your weight or calorie conscious. It's really not likely hunger, but more like caused by spasticity that's caused by the more potent drug in an empty stomach.d that like getting goosed with a rod as your walking through a stoor, it stops you in your tracks. Opiates effect the entire GI system, from your stomach untill they leave. They aren't known to cause a false sense of hunger in your brain.

Good luck, Dave

I agree with Dave, these types of medications can cause stomache pain which can actually be construed as hunger pains, they feel nearly identical. I have the same problem. After a period of time however the pains become so severe I had to be placed on Nexium and an anti-nausea medication to prevent it. If it continues to be bothersome I would talk to your PM about it, they should be familiar with the problem.
I find that eating a few crackers or toast when taking certain meds helps greatly. Never take pain medication on an empty stomache, you are only asking for trouble!

When I was on Dilaudid (4-8mg. every 6-8 hrs for breakthrough) I could have eaten everything in the house!! It gave me a huge appetite! So I can relate to what you're saying Mystic. Another drug that has me craving sweets and other carbs is oxycodone which I am taking now if needed for breakthrough pain. My long acting med is methadone and that hasn't had much effect on my appetite. I'm also on Topomax which is a good thing - it tends to make me lose my appetite so it all evens out in the end, I hope!! KathyMac:blob_fire
