querty,

Start with a 1 pound T-bone steak of average grade.
Remove the bone and trim off the fat to 1/8", just a tiny amount.
According to the USDA, that leaves you with 287 grams or a little over 10 ounces of meat.
That meat contains 804 calories inclucing 70 grams of protein. But the downside is that there 63% of the calories are FAT that is nearly half saturated (22 grams of saturated fat.)

The chicken is a better choice, especially skinless breast meat. You can get the same 70 grams of protein at under 400 calories with fewer than 3 grams of saturated fat.

If you are going to have steak it is best to have a cut that has "LOIN" in the name. These are the Leanest Cuts. The Leaner the better!bb

Bluej,

Nope on the lean loin.
Loin is tender and delicious because it comes from the steer that gets no workouts. Thus it is well marbled with fat and among the highest fat cuts of beef.
For leaner cuts lok to the ROUND cuts, basically the thigh and buttock area, that carry the steer around all day and are tough muscle. Lean and tasty but they take LONG cooking to tenderize them. Think top round, bottom round and eye round.

The loin cuts are Porterhouse, T-bone, shell steak and the gorgeous filet mignon.

I will disagree with you on that one...Sirloin and Tenderloin are the Leanest Cuts. Porterhouse and T-bone do not have the word Lean in them do they?

Just read on a different site that both loin and round are the leanest. :) You're both right. :dizzy:
