View Full Version : Metatarsal shortening

Hi, I have lived with high arches and claw toes for my whole life untill I could no longer buy shoes.
I was told about these possibly genetic conditions by my doctor who refered me to a fab foot surgen.

The plan was to shorten and pin just one v. bad toe straight, by removing sections of bone from the toe PIP and metatacil. Surgery went soo well that no pin was required as upon removing a section of metatacil my toe dropped down and is now bolted in place and healing nicely. :D)

I'll find out later this week how it looks and get to try walking without crutches!
Can anyone suggest a good shoe manufacturer or retailer to look to for once I can wear shoes again?
All the shoes I see are completely wrong for my feet. Sandles rub on the top of my foot and toes causing blisters in minutes so are out of the question - I have been living in boots but now Ive had the operation I can look for shoes!!! yey!!

Hi,

So i had the dressing removed and went home disapointed cause I hoped to see the work carried out in an x-ray but none were taken plus my foot and ankle are so weak and swollen that standing up, foot flat on the floor I was still putting all my weight thru my good foot, as the bad one felt too weak. (its also looking brused again)

Had to go trainer shopping - again - I bought new, larger ladies trainers a week ago based on my good foot but I can't get them on, so I had to go shopping in the mens dept and buy a mens size, four sizes above that of my good foot because ladies shoes are too small. :-( - Gotta say, that walking in the new trainers made me feel really spaced out and sooooo happy!! It was un-imaginable!

I had a long soak in the bath this morning and it felt mad - having my foot submersed felt so normal and relaxing!! :) I am walking in my new mens trainers, much slower and can manage without crutches for a few minutes at a time before I feel soo knackered that I really want the crutches again!!

Housework here I come!!! :)

Glad the surgery went well for you. Sounds like you are doing well and will be walking very soon. I was supposed to have this done 2 years ago from a sugeron but had the neuroma surgery done instead (liagement release).

best of luck!
Happy healing...

How long ago was your surgery? Were you in a cast, a CAM walker or a boot? Were you NWB at all, or PWB? I've never really heard of your type of surgery before, so I don't know what you can expect.

Maybe if you ask the Dr., he or she can recommend a brand of shoes. Usually they are particular about what you can wear after surgery. I can only wear good shoes, always with my orthotics, or Birkenstocks. No cute sandals or Keds for this girl!

I do know what you mean about the lame, swollen ankle. It will strengthen and feel better soon. I also had to get men's shoes, a US size 9. I'm usually a women's size 8! I didn't care, I wore those big old black velcro sneakers gladly! Did you get exercises to do? If so, do them a few times a day. It won't take too long before you can put full weight on it again. The freedom to walk across the room holding your own drink is so great!

As for the bruising, mine swelled and turned purple often, especially in the hot shower. It takes a long time. Let us know how you progress! Cindy
