I absolutely love chips. I used to eat them all the time but I have been trying to eat healthy so it's the first thing I cut. I used to eat chips as a snack to munch on. Now I try to eat fruits, yogurt for a snack. I still have a craving for the "chip kind of stuff". I have been eating pretezels and triscuits (reduced fat) instead. Are these things just as bad as chips...any of chip/cracker type things I can eat at a moderate amount for a snack? Thanks.

Few things are as bad as chips because they are grease fried. The other sin of most of these snacks is an obscene amount of salt.
A GOOD choice is bald pretzels (no surface salt) if you can stand them.
Alas, for me, the taste of pretzels so much depends on that shovelful of crunchy salt :(.

Do pretzels have a ton of salt?
Also, what exactly does salt do..why is it so bad?

Yes, pretzels do have a lot of salt and no, it's not good for you at all. Here's why..
Your table salt is actually 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals such as moisture absorbents, and iodine. Dried at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, the excessive heat alters the natural chemical structure of the salt causing the potential for a myriad of health problems in your body.
Stay away from pretzels and chips, chips are actually toxic. If you want a nice snack to have when you feel like it, try almonds, cashews and other nuts (salt-free) or take a trip to the health food store and usually they have some pretty good tasting chip-like snacks without all the crap...

I agree, nuts and fruits snacks are good, I also like popcorn (but easy on the butter). In moderation, I also like Sun chips as a way to get some more whole wheat.
I sure love potato chips, though. I once in awhile give in but get the ones with sea salt(I know, it's still salt but at least some healthy stuff in it).
Basically, it's good to restrict or completely cut out chips.

The problem with high GI carbs like chips is that they are addictive. Eating them causes the cravings you are getting. And, while reducing trans fats is good, eating low-fat varieties, if anything, makes the cravings worse (reducing the amount of fat effectively increases the glycemic index). You can stop the cravings by switching to non-carb snacks, like cheese and nuts.
Cheers,
Mark :)

hey! I make my own chips!
Theyre good and quick to make and i'm sure much better than pretzels or fried chips. I just get some pita bread and pull apart the two layers, cut them into little triangles, spread over a baking pan (covered in aluminum foil so i down have to wash the pan, just peel off the foil and throw it away when i'm done), and put em in the oven to crisp into little crunchy chips! I'm sure you could do this with corn tortillas and other flat breads. You can make a whole bunch and put em in a big ziplock bag for later!
