Hello to all of you
I have notice that each of us either suffer the same fate or worse. I have experinced everything each of you have gone through. I will say to all of you that I do not recomend rod and scews sugeries. I have had several failed back sugeries going back to 1978 my last in 1995. I have total disabilty and recieve ssi and it is total poverty. I do have medicade and have seeked out pain managemnt only to be told they do not except medicade. I have become a total shut in. My biggest problem is that I am prescibede 240 7.5 mg per month since 1996 I have been one of the lucky ones and have a pm doctorwho truly wanted to help. But she also will not prescribre me anything stronger My toleranse level has made it impossibel to take the medication as prescribed. I find my self taking up to 40 a day to relif pain then save 40 and tepper off then get ready for hell and go through withdrwal. I Have spokeken to pain mangment Dr. Who said they put me on oxycatin and a break through medcation thougth that would be great but he wanted $500 per visit and I get $603.00 per month. Help? Mentally I know I have lost it as well as phiscally. I have let my whole family down, and as one other person said I have no friends becuase I don't want to be seen the way I am. I am lost I know most of you will say get off the meds but the pain is there greater than ever. I am lost?

Admit59,
I've also have had failed back surgeries with rods and screws and titanium disks and yes in some they have not been effective.Life can be hindered by the pain and yes I have had days I couldn't move because of the pain.I'm not gonna lecture on the abuse of the taking 40 pills in a given day.You already stated the heck you get from the with drawl.Have you given it any thought on finding a different Dr and different ways to ease the pain.Physical therapy, meditation, yoga.Has your DR discussed with you if this is skeletal pain, nerve pain or muscle pain.It could be a combination of all and with a combination of meds and some therapy it may improve your quality of life.Being shut in,and you already stated that you physical and mental well being has been effected.depression can add to the pain and make the symptoms worse.Try to find a different Dr and see if they can treat you properly.I know having medicaid can leave you with limited Drs,but there are good ones out there.

Hey
I noticed that you were from abberville is that Louisiana? If so I know a dr that would charge you about 400 a month in Lafayette and one in Houston that charges like 145 a month. If you want more info on either let me know. The unfortunate thing about PM dr's in our area is that they dont accept any kind of insurance. So that leaves a big price for us to pay. I use my insurance card for my meds so that helps alot. Now depending on your need the dr in Lafayette may just charge 200. IT just depends. Hope I can help.

Wow I only pay 100 a month for my Dr visits. His building is huge and has many Dr. offices, plus a pharmacy(where he wants us to get our scripts filled). The pharmacy prices there are so so cheap. So I guess I am lucky. Thats crazy, those prices. I realy hope you feel better, I think you need a new Dr. for sure. Taking 40 pills a day is crazy, you could die. Am I right here? Your in a tough situation and I feel for you

Have you checked you local united way agency? They have clinics that are sliding scales and accept medicare medicade too.
They have some great facilities in Houston area and i imgine some decent ones as well in louisiana. Layffett has some free sliding scale clinics as well if you call around.
Try seeing if a doc can help you with a "team approach". While some on pain managment may scoff at other suggestions there is things for nerve pain non narcotic, low doses of ole fashion amitriplene which also can help nerves and certain types of pain, anxiety meds, beta blockers, and can be used in conjunction with straight pain meds depending on what your doctor would recomend. For some pain meds and muscle relaxers are not the only thing out there that can help .
The isolation can be hurtful in and of itself. See if you might be albe to find a support group run by a local hospitial in the area you are in. There may be some great referenece materials to be gained that way. Also if in a metro area many areas have numbers you can call that have "metro lift" that will bring you to doc appointements as well as grocery and or walmarts in some cases.
Last i might suggest you contact a social service agency in your area. See if you can get a adult social worker assigned to you that may assit you in finding the different resources in your area.
There are resources out there if you dig a bit

Hi 59, It's usually the first visit that is the most expensive and then follow ups are dramaticlly less, at least that's how it is around here. I signed up for medicare once I was eligable and although it didn't have a drug plan, untill this year, methadone was afordable. The equivelant of 600 mgs of long actiing morphine that cost 1400 a month can be replaced for 50 bucks worth of methadone a month. SO when I had no prescription insurance I would fall back to meth each time out of financial need.
Medicare has been great though, I don't know if you have medicare or mea sate funded program medicaid. Around here medicaid or medicare means certain payment, they do have to negotiate like any other doc that acepts insurance but it is pure greed that drives docs to except cash only and not discoount their prices because those that have, will pay. Honestly this kind of doc isnt the most scroupulous person you wantmanaging your health.
My concern is what repeated withdrawal is doing and has done to your heart. Geberally withdrawal isn't fatal but I know someone that dies very close to 30 after eyars of binging and then going through withdrawal. His heart was 3 times the size of a normal heart at autopsy.
You should have open enrolement for medicare once or twice a year, the plan offered through social securiurity and the price can be offset by your income. Medicare ahas been great. Aside from the hospital copay they payed for my pump and it cost about 20 bucks a month to deliver dilaudid or morphine directly to my spine where it's much more effective. The company that makes the bulk of the pumps has a a certification system for implants and can give you the name of every doc in the area that is cerrtified to implant and mange intrathecal pumps. if you contact medtronics, they are one of this sites sponsers at medtronics.com. The new pumps have larger resevoirs and can go as long as 4- 6 months between refills once adjusted to the right level.
Back wise I'm in a similar position, failed fusions and lots of broken and loose screws and rods with every attempt.Fortunately the pumps are most effective on back pain without leg pain but can still help folks with leg pain too. You may have to travel a little but it would likely be well worth it in the end.
Another alternative is methadone programs for opiate addictions. All you have to be is dependnet on opiates to qualify for once a day dosing at a meth clinic. Meth is an effective pain killer although when used for CP the meds are taken home and dosed every 4-6-or 8 hours. One dose of meth a day may not provide the greatest relief at night but it's better than what your doing to yourself. You would have to go when you have opiates in your system for them to find and verify your dependence but it would get you something 364 days a year and end the cycle of withdrawal.
If you have any questions just ask. You likely have more choices than you think. Any university or public hospital that excepts state and fed funding must except medicaid and medicare patients. If you could find a PM program based out of a hospital you would have better luck finding one to acccept your insurance. There are usually alternatives we aren't even aware of. I'm sure you remeber the days of no pain meds for anyone and docs that controlled who we saw by referral would keep patients away from docs known to use opiates even once they were available. But it's a new era where PM is likely much more available than you think.
Good luck and undertsand the folks you feel you have disapointed are just worried about what the withdrawal is doing to you and how much more you can take before it damages your heart or kills you.
Good luck, Dave

I know it is very difficult when your monthly income is so low that you are left with the decisions on where the money is going to be spent....the cost of our medical needs is so overwhelming...I don't know if you are aware that there are programs out there for prescription drug assistance...if it is a narcotic then normally they are sent to your doctor for distribution but that can be your family doctor....many drug companies will also give reduced or free medicine you just have to request it....there is a great program out there...Montel Williams is helping to make the country aware also of this program...it is Partnership for Prescription Assistance Program (PPARX

I was under the understanding that all recipricants of SSI or SSDI after 2 years or 24 months they were eligible for Medicare...now I know in PA after the 24 months you get the Medicare and then get supplemented with Medicaid...meaning cost of Medicare 88.50 is paid by the state...we have numerous insurance companies that are under that umbrella (no premuim no co pay)and you get all kinds of drs covered just like you had bought the plan privately. Also the new prescription drug coverage is great...mind you not all brand names are covered but generic is better than none!!!!
If you medicaid program provides for mental health coverage use it to help you with the overwhelming feeling of lose...it can greatly help you get through this time...no one should have to live life like that..
Keep reaching out....there is alot of help for us all... you just need to keep asking for it...don't shut yourself out from your freinds they can be a great assest for you...

I live in Louisiana and I can't find a PM doctor that will see me without insurance. Could you please give me more information about the ones you mentioned? I was seeing a doctor in baton rouge but the clinic was from New Orleans and was here only because of the hurricaine. They closed the office here in November and said they would contact me when they set up again in New Orleans. They still haven't. Any help with finding a doctor in this area would be very helpful. This post that I am replying to is old, so I'm not sure if you'll even see this reply. I just joined the board and have been reading a lot. This is a wonderful board for people that are suffering and feel like they are all alone. I'm so thankful that I found it. Thanks
