I am a 27 year old suffering from severe back pain for 10 months. I still don't have a diagnosis, however one of the surgeons I recently saw said I could have Osteoid Osteoma. It is a benign tumor that strangely responds to aspirin. I have been taking asprin for 2 days with some improvement. I was wondering if anyone has this, and knows the types of treatments other than the asprin. I have already been using ultrasound, acupuncture, NSAIDs, vicatin, herbs, and a cortisone shot in the facet joint. Another surgeon thought I should get a nerve block for the pain but if it is truely in my bone, I'm thinking it might not help fully.

So I'm also wondering if it's not this, what to do? They don't recommend fusion at this point, although don't fully articulate why. I have tried the cortisone shot, but it was only 75% helpful and only for 1 1/2 months.

Ideas?
Thanks, Aimee

Well I had not heard of it before you posted here. Did some reading on it and it looks that it will resolve itself by itself. BUT.. it can take over 2.5 years to happen. Looks like anti-steroidal anti-inflammatories are the meds of choice in dealing with it until it shrinks and dissappears.

It is more common in males in their twenties then women. If it gets real real bad with the pain, they state they can do surgery to ablate the nucleus of the tumor. Meaning to burn it basically.

I wish I could help you further, but you taught me something new I had not heard of until now. I hope you get relief soon and that it starts shrinking. Take care. Tammy:wave:
