View Full Version : Titration rule of thumb? How fast is too fast?

Wondering if my neuro. is titrating me too fast. Topamax was titrated very slowly (w/the starter pack..had no choice, really!) but it seems he's bumping up the Lamictal kinda fast.

I am currently taking 300mgs.Lamictal per day. Last week I had quite a few SPs and 2 CPs. Spoke w/neuro. and he wants me to go up to 375mgs per day for one wk.
Then up to 450mgs. thereafter.
Extreme?
Am also taking 300mgs. Topamax.

Would like to know your titration schedules...
Thank you

If you are nervous about that jump ask your Dr.

75mg is nothing to worry over.

I've increased 100 and 125 before on Lamictal without problems (on a dose of 400mg 2x/day; the blue ones)

It CAN take the system up to 2 weeks to have levels steady, so you may want to ask your Dr if you can increase week 1; then week 3 if that makes you feel safer. (understand that?; skip a week between changes)

I checked a ref book, it said "time to steady was 4-15 days"; so if you want to go on the long number 2 weeks gives your system the time to adapt rathern than 7 days.

That gives you an option if your Dr will go slow with you.

I hope your neuro let you know that Lamictal in known to have a really nasty and possibly lethal side effect. It occures more often in kids and when raised too fast. It can cause a rash of some type. I'm not familliar with it because I had no problem with Lamictal. I was taking 300mg Dilantin, 400mg Zonegran, 2000mg Keppra and 400mg Lamictal. My epileptologist looked at my seizure record at my appointment a year ago and raised Lamictal to 600mg and Keppra to 3000mg the next day.I had no problem with the increace. I still take all 4 meds, I'm very tolerant of the meds so I can't say about anyone else. Good luck and you and your loved ones will be in my prayers tonight. Jeff
