veree 10-23-2003, 05:12 AM Wondering what treatment was given. Thanks Sponsor frankb 10-23-2003, 08:16 AM i was given zantac 150mg 2x/day then changed to pepcid 20 mg 2x/day actudan 10-23-2003, 09:12 AM Yes I have been diagnosed with gastritis before. I was given ppis which did no good. I went the natural approach and it finally went away though I still have other problems. DianeMarie73 10-23-2003, 12:18 PM what did work for you? I've suffered 30 years w/ this w/ no relief. actudan 10-23-2003, 12:56 PM It's hard to say what actually got rid of my gastritis because I did so many things at one time. I quit taking the prevacid and I immediatley started taking digestive enzymes, essential fatty acids (supposed to help with inflammation), EV.EXT (supposed to work like vioxx but is natural), hydrochloride (adding acid to my stomach since I had been on prevacid too long that my nutritionist wanted my acid levels to get back up to normal), and slippery elm. Those were my nutritionist's recommendations. I added gamma oryzanol and n-acetyl cysteine since there were some clinical studies done using these supplements for gastritis. From gnc's website: The results of several clinical trials suggest that gamma oryzanol supplementation can help people with gastritis and other gastrointestinal complaints. In one study, people with chronic gastritis were given 300 mg of gamma oryzanol per day.19 After two weeks, 23% of people taking gamma oryzanol reported that it was “extremely effective” and 55% rated it as “moderately effective.” Another study produced similar results: People with various types of gastritis received 300 mg of gamma oryzanol per day. After two weeks, more than 62% of those with superficial gastritis, more than 87% of those with atrophic gastritis, and all people with erosive gastritis experienced improvement. These results were confirmed in a large study involving approximately 2,000 people with various gastrointestinal complaints, including several forms of gastritis. In a preliminary trial, 1–4 grams per day of N-acetyl cysteine given to people with atrophic gastritis for four weeks appeared to increase healing. So, since I started many supplements at once, I can't really say which one helped the most. I am now also taking limbitril which is for spasms so it may be helping too. All I know is that I had gastritis for months and it was awful. I can't see how you are able to deal with it for years. Also, some folks recommend Mastica for gastritis. I have no experience with it but upon researching it I found that it is used for H-pylori bacteria and gastritis. Other herbs that you may want to investigate include Arginine Beta-carotene Glutamine Vitamin A Zinc Chamomile Goldenseal Licorice Marshmallow Wood betony Oh yeah, I did try the marshmallow for awhile but I didn't like the taste so I quit using it. And I also added more vitamin c to my diet in order to help neutralize the free radical cells that are occuring during the inflammation process. Good luck in finding something that works! DianeMarie73 10-23-2003, 02:10 PM Thank-you! frankb 10-23-2003, 02:12 PM hi..you suffered 30 years from gastritis ? did you not get any treatment at all ? what were your symptoms ------------------ GBY gillian30 10-23-2003, 02:40 PM I was diagnosed with gastritis in August. My first treatment was Nexium once a day for about 6 weeks, and now Aciphex once a day which I'll use for another 6 weeks. After that I'll try the natural route, since I've heard bad things about taking PPIs for too long. I never had typical reflux sensations, so it's hard to say if this treatment is working at all...I was diagnosed with inflammation and gastritis after an endoscopy. I did manage to gain weight after starting the PPIs, which I needed to do, so they must have done something positive. |
