View Full Version : Balding process: How long does it really take?

Hello,

This is my first post on Healthboards. Ok, let's begin...

I'm a 32 year-old, white male and I've noticed that my hairline has been receding a little bit. I noticed a very small gap where I part my hair to the side. I looked at some pictures of myself from a few years ago and last year, and I noticed that I had more hair in that area than I do now. I still have plenty of hair, and actually, that small gap is barely unnoticeable, but I see a difference, which matters to me.

Here's what I wanted to know...I found an old picture of my grandfather (mother's side) and in that picture he was bald (few hairs on the sides). Now, in that picture he was about 38 or 39 years old. Considering that I'm 32 now, is it possible that I could go bald before I turn 40 just like my grandfather did? Am I following in my grandfather's footsteps? I have no idea what his hairline looked like when he was my age. I assume he had much less hair at that age than I do. I haven't really been losing that much hair. A few strands of hair would come out after a shower, which is normal. It's not like I've been losing clumps of hair or anything like that, nothing out of the ordinary.

Anyway, I heard that the balding process can take a number of years to happen. I figured that if I do eventually go bald, it would probably happen in my early-to-mid fifties or late forties? Does that sound about right or no? I mean, there's no way that I can go from the hair I have now to complete baldness within the next 6 or 7 years? Can it? If anyone has some input on this, I kindly appreciate.

Thanks.

I know people who go completely bald in a few years, and some that take many many years. I'm 19 and had the receding hairline.. I started taking Saw Palmetto(herb) and my hairloss has actually stopped. Do some research on it, it's amazing

Brian, there are a lot of different "versions" and amounts of Saw Palmetto out there. I'm just curious to know which Saw Palmetto you're taking...

Brian,
how saw palmetto are you taking per day, in milligrams.
I have heard of one individual who takes 1600 mg per day.
what is your daily dosage?

thanks,

Larry

I did some research on Saw Palmetto and I found an article online where they conducted a small study of healthy men (between 23-64) and they took one softgel (200mg), twice a day, and in 4 months noticed a 60% hair growth improvement. The addition of Gingko increased circulation to the scalp as well. As for side effects, some experienced headaches and diarrea.

You have to be careful. Just taking the BERRIES won't do anything. You have to take saw palmetto EXTRACT, with at least 13% fatty sterols for it to do anything.

It will say on the back of the package (at least it doea here in Canada) if it has 13% fatty sterols)

If you're just taking the berries, it's not doing anything.
