 Awwww, my poor little guy is soooo sick!? I don't know what to do for him. He is 3 months old today and this morning at 2am he woke up choking on mucas. It scared the poop out of me and I bolted out of bed like a bolt of lightening. I picked him up and brought him into bed with me to nurse and the poor little man could hardly breathe to feed :(
I have been using an aspirator every half an hour to an hour and trying to get him to sleep more during the day. Right now I have him in the bassinett in our room proped on his side and the humidifer going. Does anyone have any other suggestions to help him through this tough time? I am so scared to nurse him in bed in case he gets pushed up against my chest too hard and can't breathe.
My Doc said decongestants are no good at all for babies of his age and that it's a waste of money and time. He said to use a saline nasal spray and aspirator. That's fine during the day but I don't know how to get through the night?!
Anyone have ideas or going through the same thing?
P.S. Does anyone know if b/f babies are suppose to be less likely to get sick? I thought this was the case but Tanner is really ill.

Hi,
When my son was 5 months he had a terrible flu and was weezing and so congested that at times I worried about him suffocating. What worked for me was to take him into the bathroom and hold him after in the steam (try turning on the shower for 5 minutes to make the room very steamy). I did that around every 3 hours for 15 minutes all night long and it made a real difference in his breathing.
Good luck!

Awww I hope he gets better soon!! My first daughter had that problem and they told me to also run the hot shower in the bathroom and get the room steamy but then they told me after sitting in the steam for a while to run and open the freezer and let her breathe that in right afterwards.....sounds weird i know...they said it would dry it up and expand the lungs. another thing that helped was putting a little bit of baby vicks under her nose and a bit on her chest with a vicks vaporizer. oh and ONE MORE THING that helped (sorry for all this) was i proped a blanket or 2 under the head of her basinett mattress to kindof elevate her so the guke would run down instead of to her head where she couldnt breathe. hope this helps!!

Jennifer:)

Awe, so sorry he's sick! I have no idea what to do, DD has never been sick.. yet (knock on wood).

As for a BF baby getting sick, well, obviously it does happen. The immunity he gets is only as good at what your body creates, so perhaps you're fighting something as well? You can still be fighting a virus without being sick, so maybe bucking up on vit C will Tanner?

I would make sure that you drink a lot of water and encourage him to nurse like crazy. Poor little guy.

Have you tried one of those vapor plug-in's? They're supposed to be good for colds. I think I read on here somewhere before about someone putting on in their baby's room when they were sick.

Elevating the bed head is always a good idea. Make sure you do the elevating under the mattress or on the floor with books if in a cott! I use a few drops of Karvol which has vapour to clear the passages. what ever you buy, make sure you ask your chemist/pharmacist if it is suitable for babies!!!!!! Vicks vapour rub is too harsh for a little baby and my dd came out in a rash! I use the karvol drops on the other side of the room so her eyes don't water. A saline solution (5%) dropped into the nose (1-2 drops per nostril) can clear some mucus... after a bit of spluttering.

Good luck, my dd and I have a little cold at the moment too, winter time here in New Zealand so par for the course.

Thanks everybody. Tanner is still sick but then again, so are the rest of us! Our whole family is sick. Caden can handle it really well as he is 2 and can run around and sit up on his own. Chad and I are not feeling all that great either. We have the sore throat and nasal congestion. Tanner slept much better last night but he was still up much earlier than usual.
If he's still having trouble tonight then I will run the shower for him and hope that works!
I hope everyone else is feeling okay! It is not pleasant when the whole family is feeling sick at the same time!

I hope that he continues to feel better. Liam was sick all winter, often with congestion. My doctor told us that it can sound like a bad chest cold but actually it was just his nasal passages draining into his throat. The shower thing is good, especially if you can run him into a cold room (we use an air conditioner) after the shower. Another thing I found useful this winter was to run an extremely hot bath and put a handful of Vicks int he steamy water. Then I would hold him in the bathroom. When he was really small, I would run hot water in the sink and then put his baby tub on top of it and let the steam rise around him.

Good luck,

Jen

Hey Dawn!
Sorry to hear that Tanner is so sick...and the rest of you too. We've been fortunate but then again we are as a family almost never get sick. It's one of my theories about being a farm kid...exposed to everything and now have good antibodies maybe???
Steam is good but not all babies can tolerate it....or toddles either. Zack got too hot when we tried it with him. The vapourizer worked fairly well though. Get rest when you can....maybe Caden can go to a friends or family members house while you and Tanner nap and feel better. Good luck!
Brycen hasn't had any nasal congestion yet knock on wood but he is mucousy at times and I often put him to sleep on his side.
Good luck!
