Hi. My daughter, Brenna, is 14 months old. She is constantly thirsty! She drinks all the time! She would rather drink than eat,she throws fits and cries for water or for a drink. She wakes up in the middle of the night screaming for something to drink. I find this very odd...Also, along with this drinking issue, shes been having major mood swings. I've never known a baby to be so moody. Nothing will calm her. She will scream and throw herself around for no apparent reason. If I try and hold her, she makes herself go limp or she'll start hitting or kicking. She hardly sleeps at all anymore, it seems. I put her down to bed at 9pm and she will still be awake at midnight and then shes awake again at 4am and will be up until noonish. I'm worried and I cant seem to find any info on the web. I dont know if the thirst, the tantrums and the sleeping have anything to do with each other but my goodness, Im pulling my hair out here! I dont know what to do with her. Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! -Andrea

ilovemysailor, You may want to talk to your ped about her thirst. My cousin experienced the same thing and my aunt took him to the dr and found that he was diabetic. Why it was effecting his thirst so much I'm not sure, but it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out.

I don't know about the thirst, but my 14 mo. old is sooo moody too. She tells me no, kicks and screams sometimes too. I have also noticed that her eating habits are changing, she used to be my little piggy but now she is picky. I think it must be a phase.

Hi,

I would also recommend going to the doctor. The moodiness by itself could just be a stage but the thirst could be a signal of something else. Get her to a doc. and rule out everything. Then, you may be able to sleep better.

I would also take her to see the doctor..just to be on the safe side. A neighbor of mine went through the same thing with their toddler and it turned out the insatiable thirst was being caused by diabetes.

Thank you all for your input, I really appreciate it. Wow, diabetes, huh? That's a scary thought. My dad had actually mentioned the same thing. I also found a bruise on her chest about 2 weeks ago that has yet to heal, which worries me also. Definitely going to get her into the doc. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted -Andrea

Hey everyone, just a little update. I took Brenna to the doctor on Friday. She sent her to the lab to get blood work done to check her sugar levels and everything else for diabetes and also a urine sample (( although we're having trouble with the stupid pee bag thingys!! )) So now we're just waiting for the blood test results. Could take awhile, she said. As far as the screaming goes, doc says she thinks its just a behavioral issue because shes at the age where she cant tell us what she wants or what the problem is. I just hope this phase ends soon!!!!!! Thanks to all who gave advice and Ill keep you updated. Take care, Andrea

Good luck Andrea.

Again, if you get a moment, let us know what the test results are.

Well, so much for the testing taking awhile. Brenna's doc called this evening and said that she DOES NOT have dibetes (( thank goodness!! )) and if anything, her sugar was a litle low..69. Anyway, she said her kidneys are working just fine, too. They still want a urine sample, but like I said, we are having some trouble with that. Thanks everyone!

Yeah! Low sugar? -- Give her a cupcake to celebrate! (ok- so I am kidding, well maybe not. My son ate his first cupcake the other day and it was really funny!)
