Ive been trying to tone up my stomach..so I starting eating healthy, and exercising which ive been doing for little over a month.. After running on the treadmill (I usually run 6 days a week 2 miles a day) my legs are in pain (mainly my left knee and hips)..the pain is in my bones not my muscles.. I dont know what to do. I dont want to stop exercising and lose all my results. My knee almost always hurts now..but my entire legs become extremely painful right after I run..and this pain lasts about an hour. I dont want to cause extreme damage to myself..which I probably am..but is there something else I can do besides stop exercising? Ive always had joint problems, and I dont consume very much calcium.. I hate milk, it makes me nauseous.. and ive tried milk substitutes but there disgusting. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, cause im clueless as to what to do. thanks in advanced..

Maybe you could try the eliptical machine(which has a gliding movement easy on the joints) or a bike to ease the stress of your bodyweight on your hips and knees?

Well I exercise at home and i only have a treadmill, and a exercise bike. should i just switch from doing my cardio on the treadmill to the bike? Is exercising on the bike give the same effect and benefits as the treadmill.. I just feel like running burns more calories, and I tend to push myself harder when running.. and also riding on the bike i get bored more easily, making me not want to do it for to long. Are there any suppliments out there that will help sooth my joints or something? I just think if i have to stop running I will probably stop doing exercise all together cause i will get bored with the bike, and i think the bike will be harsh on my knees... For only being 19 my bones and joints are a mess!

You may have a very simple problem. Have a professional (maybe from the Runner's Room) check to see if you pronate or supenate when you run. If you involuntarily turn your foot in or out you are putting excess pressure on your legs and hips. Worth checking out.

I ended up seeing an orthotics doctor and he prescribed inserts for my shoes that allow proper form when walking or running. Now I don't have any pain.

How much does it cost to do that?

If you go to an orthotics specialist you're looking at around $350 for the assessment, the orthotics and followup. Worth every penny, believe me, if you have mechanical problems with your feet that messes up the alignment of your legs and maybe even your hips. Talk to your family doctor first. He should be able to judge if you are pronating or supenating. Then he will refer you to the specialist. Some work medical plans cover the expense.

Sometimes all you really need are really good runners that support your feet properly. I didn't ask if you were using proper footwear. Good runners cost around $150 and up.

For now you really should consider cutting back on your running by maybe alternating that with another exercise you might enjoy that won't put more stress on your feet and legs. Maybe invest in some weights. You burn more calories carrying around muscle than you do fat anyway! Good Luck!
