I see my PM&R doctor Monday at 9am. Several people have mentioned demerol has some back side effects if used long term. So what would you use for BT pain?
My demerol does not stop the BT pain, it sort of dulls it. Maybe just what it is supposed to do. Initially it worked great. Stopped the BT pain fairly fast.
Then came the Fentanyl Lollipop...it REALLY stopped the pain, but it made me sick at my stomach most of the time. Suggestions please?
I used to have an equivilency chart, but I can't find it anymore. I am sure my PM&R dr. knows of lots of pills that would equal out to 150mg of demerol.
Since you wonderful people have already shown me so much about pain control,I feel like I am being a little pushy here ...it seems like I ask you so much. You have been very patient.
What do YOU use for BT pain? Thank you, time to put the carpal tunnel brace on.

I use 30 mg Roxicodone and frankly, it is the only thing that gives me any halfway decent relief.
My base med is 100 mcg Fentanyl patch. It does NOTHING. I've also tried 100mg MS Contin BID and 60 mg Kadian BID as my base med-ALL USELESS
And the worse thing is that I am in level 8-10 pain 24/7 even with the meds and it is getting worse.
My pm Doc refuses to rx OxyContin, Actiq, Dilaudid, etc. and I'm getting very depressed with the pain.

Good luck at your pm doctor tomorrow. I hope you two can get a grip on controling your break through pain. Just lay it all out on the table and let him know how bad your bt pain is. I know it's frustrating to have to deal with this, but hopefully your doctor will be open and receptive to trying something new to help.
Let us know how it goes...

I hope we can come up with something. This meeting tomorrow is with his .... well...NPA? The assistant is pretty sharp. I am hoping he has some new ideas.
Last time I was in he asked me if I didn't need any meds. I told him no, I was fine. I really think the pharmacy must have miscounted. I got a 3 month supply in late May ---early June. I still have about a 40 day supply at 6 a day. And the prescription was for "4 a day and 90 days". I did not complain. Just took the meds and figured if I ran low, these extra ones would help out.
I sort of figure I should always have a couple of weeks extra meds if I can.
Maybe not, but I fear withdrawals.
Bottom line is still....what should I get to replace demerol? I have some fentanyl Lollipops that act real fast, but tend to make me ill. PLUS...with my legs broke out in a rash...we may find I am allergic to large doses of morphine.
Lezlee...thanks for the encouragement. My left hand just gave up...time for thr carpal tunnel brace...thanks again ...Dave

Dave-
More than welcome! :)
I couldn't even begin to suggest a medication your doctor might consider. Maybe you should just ask him/her what kind of meds they get the best results from? You obviously are in need of something, and I've always thought that honesty is best when dealing with doctors about pain levels.
If you are breaking out into such a rash, I would think it's deffinately from the meds. That's a scarey thing too. From what I understand, allergic reactions tend to get worse with each outbreak....not fun.
Anyway, take care and let us know what the assistant is able to come up with. Good Luck!!

Alan...Lezlee...thanks again. Alan, I have tried ACTIQ. Lollipop is what they call it. It quite possibly creates more pain than it relieves for me.
At least the carpal tunnel is better today. Hard typing with one hand, but that is the only way it will get better.
Another interesting side effect the BT pain meds have on me...and I find myself
chuckling over this...if I am in pain at 11am, I won't take the BT meds because I am afraid of needing them later.
THEN there are the times I go to bed thinking...nahhhh, I don't need the BT meds, I feel ...pretty much ok. Some pain, but anytime I can avoid putting drugs in me, that is good. The next morning my wife tells me I kept her awake half the night moaning and groaning. I feel like I can't win for losing at times. Guess that is why we are on this forum. Looking for answers.
HEY..I nearly forgot this. I took my demerol (150mg) last night...one of the nights I did take it because I moved some boxes around for the wife. I got up to answer natures call about 3am and found the room swaying back and forth. Then I felt like I was walking down hill and would fall forwards any moment. I literally held on to the wall while I was in the bathroom. Same thing going back to bed. I never turn the lights on because it wakes the wife up. With her hearing everything wakes her up. But that feeling of walking downhill and that I would fall forwards with every step...was odd.
Might be time for my walker again. It is hard to know. I used to gripe at my mom and dad for not using their walkers, crutches, etc. NOW I understand why they didn't. This getting old isn't for sissies. Take care.

I do not know whether to laugh or cry...whether to thank my PM doctor or .....
well, never mind.
My PM people said they understand about my problems with the demerol, but I see the surgeon in only 8 days, they would prefer to keep things stabilzed over
that period.
I will be patient, I will be patient, I will be patient...I will be patienthttp://www.healthboards.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
