Hello ladies. Hubby and I found our baby furniture set over the weekend for our little guy due in November. Now the big question - mattresses! I have no idea if there is a major difference in quality. Like, is a $149 mattress better than a $90 one from Babies R Us?
I want a decent mattress, but I don't really want to pay over $100. Is that being too cheap? Is it risky to get something that costs under $100?
Then there are the spring and foam kind. Decisions....decisions.....! I don't know what to think. Any advice?

We got one for about $50 at Target ... it's got springs like a "traditional" mattress. It's pretty firm, and Spencer (13 weeks) sleeps very well on it.

Hi!
It's fun shopping for baby isn't it? :)
The carseat and the bedding (mattress) were two things we definitely did not want to cut the costs on....
We went with a Colgate mattress (according to Baby Bargains) because it was top-rated in consumer reports. It is a foam mattress--which tend to be cheaper than coil ones . They weigh less as well, this makes it easier to change the sheets (which I have to do often!) The downside to this company (colgate) is that your really can't find their product in stores--so you will need to do a search on-line.
Good Luck!

Rachel - the place where we bought our furniture only sold Colgate mattresses. You brought up a good point - foam vs. coil. I think the sales lady told us the coil would last longer, but I have no idea if there is a real difference. Why would someone choose a foam mattress over a coil one - and vice versa.

Hey there!
Wow, so they do sell colgates in a store :)
Coil vs. Foam....this may just be a personal preference. We like that the foam mattress we have is lighter and easier to remove from crib. It is nice a firm as well. I think that when it comes to a mattress, I would say get the best mattress that you can afford...I know you said you didn't want to spend more than $100..That sounds very reasonable.
maybe others have some words of wisdom for you as well? :)
Take care...hope my 2 cents have helped!

i know i am in the uk so i probably don't count but i paid £65 for mine it is spring and quite firm. i brought it because it had all sorts of covers on it to aid airflow and prevent baby overheating which is obviously linked to cot death - sids. i guess it being firm it supports a little ones developing spine and imoa that is better than if a foam one is soft. hope this is of use to you, oh and make sure it fits the cot well too. congrats bet you can't wait till november:)

i bought the cheapest one i could find, which was still about 60 or 70 dollars, i can't quite remember which. i bought a nice swing and the most expensive bouncy seat, but what the heck does a newborn know about what kind of mattress they're sleeping on? i think mine is a baby sealy.

My sons ped recomended one with springs. So I got a cheap cheap one from Target. Actually, I had it on my registry so I'm not sure how much it was, but I know it was very cheap. They didn't have it in store so it was shipped to my house.

I bought mine at Walmart. I don't remember how much I paid for it but I remember that they had three different kinds. The lady that worked in the baby section told me that if you plan on using that mattress for a toddler bed later on to get the more expensive one.

I paid about $100 for ours. I think it is a baby sealy that I purchased at Babies R' Us.It has held up great and haven't really given a lot of thought after purchase. I remember feeling a little bad about not getting the most expensive but I think all the sleepless nights we've had have nothing to do with how many springs my baby is on. I used to sleep on the floor of my moms car (before seatbelt laws?) and there was a huge lump on the floor?I would just get something that looks like it will hold up through a couple kids or your child for 2-3 years or 5 on a toddler bed.
