My son (19) has applied for SSI.

He was born without his right hand. He was a great kid, until he became a teen, and for the past two years has been "on his own". He's gotten into drugs, broken the law and been in jail. He met a fellow in jail, like himself without a right hand... and the guy told him to get SSI!
Son has inquired and is planning on applying for it - as I see it, he's looking for a "FREE RIDE".
Now, granted he IS without a hand, but let me tell you he can do ANYTHING anyone else can do. He did have a prosthesis when he was little, and we never treated him as "disabled or handicapped".
He tells us he'll get over a $1000 a month AND money for college. He's a HS dropout too. A real disapointment all around. A real example of what drugs CAN do to ruin a persons life. He want no help... he's sure anticipating this free ride.

Tell me this is not so... benefits for someone like him! ?????

Stranger things have happened. My father who is healthy as anyone else, but has an alcohol habbit gets ssi, but myself, whom he has permanently damaged does not. I am blind in one eye, have cerebral palsy, seizures, and clinical depression.
Go figure, it happens.
