I just got a call from my doctor and she said that my ferratin level was little low and to go an on iron pills everyday. I got her to tell me my levels, and according to the norm, mine is not low. They tested it at LabCorp, and there levels are 10-291. Mine is 15, which says normal on my labs. My question is why are they treating me even though it's normal? They think the iron will help with my symptoms of being lightheaded all of the times, and my with my headaches. I've had all sorts of tests done, and they can't find anything yet causing all of the problems, and this has been going on for about 8 months now. I only get anemic during my periods, which are really long and heavy. Any comments.

For some people their ferritin needs to be about 50-70 for them to feel good. Each person is different. When my ferritin is below 20 my hair starts falling out more than what is considered normal hair loss and I feel awful all the time.

thanks for replying. I wasn't sure if that was one the low end or not, but apparently everybody is different. At least this doctor doesn't go by just guidelines, like most of them do.

You say that your periods are heavy and that can really drain your iron stores. By taking the iron on a daily basis it will give your body an extra boost to keep up. You don't want to find yourself anemic when you could have prevented it by simply taking an iron supplement each day--and don't stop taking them until your dr advises you to do so!
