I have managed to rip off 2 of my DS ties to his bumper pads- no matter how many times i tried to get the darn things to match up- they never seemed to tie right.So- in the midst of stretching and pulling... RIP! I was going to run out today and buy a new one- but then i remebered reading somewhere- that you shouldn't use them at all- suffocation i suppose. I was wondering your thoughts on this- I worry about him getting his little feet or arms stuck. I also don't want to go out and drop 30-40 dollars if it's not necessary.Hmmmm....

That's a hard one to answer! I agree, with both my daughter and my son's cribs the bumper pad ties NEVER seemed to match up with the spindles on the crib. Someone suggested removing them and using (stitching) elastic banding, but I was terrified to try it because I was affraid they would get their little hands/feet or even head stuck in the elastic part. I was a worrier for sure.

Keep checking back, maybe someone has come up with some sort of solution for this...I'm interested in knowing if anyone has now!

DD is 4 months old and has no bumpers anymore now that she can roll over and grab them. I also took the mobile down. On the packaging for both they said not use past 6 months. I think the bumper is more for decoration anyway, and she couldn't have cared less about the mobile, so we don't miss them. I wouldn't waste your money buying another one.

The SIDS organization says no bumpers. Sorry, can't post the link but if you do a search, it is easy to find. We bought a special bumper and when the ped came to the hospital after my sons birth, she said please take it out. The risk of getting a leg caught is better than suffocating. They do make breathable bumpers that keep the legs and arms in.

i think bumper pads are a good thing. they keep your little one from getting his/her arms and legs stuck in the crib. i don't really see a baby smothering on the bumper pad, but thats just my outlook.

I had a bumper pad, until I saw my son with his face in it trying to eat it.. SOO after that NO bumper pads for us! They recomend not to use them, I've seen why not to use them... So I won't be using them! Mine matched up perfectly too :( lol...

I'd rather a broken bone from being stuck (that's an extreme, I know), than my son suffocating in his bumper pad..

Thanks Girlies. I guess we will try sans bumper pads. The only thing that still makes me nervous is- DS likes to turn himself latitude in the crib and kick his feet. I didn't think to check the packaging- i wonder if mine also said to discard after 6 months?? I will take what the SIDS foundation has to say seriously. DS is 8 months and i still worry about him stopping breathing. He's also teething and anything he can grab or pull is going in his mouth.So- better safe than sorry. Thank you all sooooo much.

I had read on here a while back that someone took the bumper pad and weaved in and out of each spindle. I tried that and it worked for us. Its not as fluffy and her face does'nt get buried in it like before, and her crib still looks really cute. I know what you all mean about the ties not matching up right! Now that I have run the pad between each spindle, it doesn't fit all the way around the crib and has a bit of a gap but ohwell!

Feb.. That's a really great idea. I think I will do that, then it seems no danger of suffocation. Thankyou so much for bringing that up.

Candice-

Moderator closed all birth month threads. They posted the rule as the very top thread. Too bad, huh? So sad!

Oh my goodness... what do we do?? They won't let us somehow talk to you ladies anywhere else and now we can't have our own support system anymore with the people we have talked to almost every day since we were 10 wks pregnant. That is just awful, I'm sorry! I miss you all!!! Ok... back to the bumper pads... I couldn't have a bed with out them because my Cailyn just knocks her head all over the place when They are off! :(

We have one of those breathable bumper pads. I had said that I would never get a pad, until dd got her tiny feet caught in between the crib spindles. The breathable bumper pads works well, she doesn't even pay attention to it, and she doesn't get her feet and legs and arms caught in the crib either!

I personally really like my bumper pad, even though your right it doesnt line up right. DS is 13 months and still uses it, he cuddles up to it like a pillow. I know its bad but he also has stuffed animals in his crib, I waited until he was one but he really sleeps better surrounded by fluff. Also I think you can do the birth month threads on the pregnancy board now.

I talked to my sons physcial therapist about it with ds when he was about 8-10 months as he kept rolling over and bumping his head on the side of the crib. We'd worked so hard to get him rolling and moving and once he started he would do it all the time and then wake himself up and cry and cry. She said that once a child can roll well independently it isn't an issue to use them as they will automatically roll away from them if then start to block their airway. It is really only an issue when then can't roll their face way from side of the crib/bumper.
I used them with him from 10 months till he got out of the crib.
Ds #2 is still in his bassinett but will move to the crib in a few weeks (when our exchange student leaves and he has a room of his own!!!) and I won't put them on until he's rolling well on his own. That might not be long since he's been rolling from tummy to back since he was 4 weeks old and just started rolling from back to his side (he's 8 weeks now). Crazy eh!!!

My dd is now 10 months and constantly sticking her feet out of her crib. I am definately going to try the weaving idea!! Why couldnt ' i think of that?

Also, where can you get the breathable bumpers? Do they come in differnet colors?

I bought breathable, mesh bumper pads. They don't have ties either. They are attached with velcro. They work great to keep her from bumping her head and to keep her legs from getting stuck in the slabs yet she can breath fine when she presses her face against them. I highly recommend them.

Just as a side not, when my son was around 5 months old, he got his little foot stuck in one of the bars--he started to scream so loud, I ran in his room...and his little leg was twisted! I was pretty scared!! He didn't break anything, but you could tell it hurt him, because he didn't understand what was happening, and struggled, which only hurt him more...so since then, I put the bumpers back in. He also sleeps with and huge pillow under a blakent, plus he has his own blankie and a few stuffed animals, AND a glow-worm so I suppose I am a bad rolemodel for the whole SIDS thing.

I think it's a double edged sword. But seeing him in pain getting his foot caught really scared me :(
