I am going to try and get off of the ppi, I am think about just stop it.
do it make you sick, or what?
is it as bad as the side effects?
side affects on the ppi for me is, stomach cramps, burning stomach, terrible stomach pain, back pain, ribs pain, my legs and arms sometime will have tingling feeling, you name it , my gum will feel bad to , I never had any of those symptoms before I went on the ppi.
any reply thank you.

Rebound usually means that the symptoms return which the person was taking the medication for in the first place. I don't know how bad it comes back because I haven't tried to get off of them yet.

PPIs don't cure the underlying cause of reflux - they only treat the symptoms. They do allow erosions in the esophogous to heal, but when you stop taking the PPIs, the acid will once again get into the esophogous and begin to create new erosions.

So whenever you stop PPIs, you can expect symptoms to return. I think that for some people, the symptoms return more gradually than for others. With LPR, the symptoms come back very fast.

But I wouldn't say that the symptoms come back worse than before - but I wouldn't want to deal with the level of symptoms that I had prior to using the PPIs.

As much as I hate hate hate taking medication every day, I can honestly say that I'd rather live a shorter life due to taking mediation every day so long as I feel good during those days. The way I felt when I wasn't on PPIs was unbearable, and frankly, it destroyed the quality of life in every respect. I don't think I could ever live like that again.

Birden,

Can you dry a different PPI? Which one are you on? What is your dosage? Maybe we can help you find one that works better for you.

I started taking Nexium in January of this year for one month. Then, when I stopped-the GERD was "gone". I went 5 months doing just fine....then caught a really bad cold...and within weeks the GERD was back. I'm trying it again. Took Nexium this time for 6 weeks....stopped a few days ago. So far, so good. I figure even if I have to keep going back on Nexium, it's better than just staying on it (IF YOU DON'T NEED TO). We'll see how it goes. Maybe with a combination of better diet...I may get more than 5 months! I miss pizza the most:mad:

I wanted to say that I have the burning stomach pain too! Mine started after starting PPI's as well. ITs awful!! Have you had an endoscope done? Mine showed gastritis-AFTER starting prilosec. I dont know what to do. Without it, I cant eat at all.

Does anyone feel ok when they first wake up - no burning or any kind of stomach symptoms and then take the PPI and have stomach burning, churning, or something. I think I'm having side effects and don't need the medication at all. Supposedly I had an ulcer and everything looked fine when the endoscopy was done. I'm not sure what to do.

I wake up with a slight irritation in my throat and as the day progresses, the burning in the stomach begins. I am taking two nexiums a day.

Isn't it scarey that a lot of us get burning pain WHILE on PPI's?

Rebound is an exaggeration of symptoms brought on from a) return of symptoms treated by medication AND b) from stopping your medication cold turkey.

I've stopped PPIs twice-once cold turkey and once by SLOWLY weaning myself down. There is no comparison in how I felt. When I suddenly stopped I was in major pain. When I weaned the medication down I had virtually no problems. It depends how long you've been on meds as to how much rebound will affect you. I read in a journal that patients taking PPIs for 2-4 weeks won't have much rebound, but longer term PPI takers will. Good luck, Skylar

Also, check out this link, where a pharmocologist explains rebound and PPIs:

I did not have anything at like burning stomach and no stomach pain at all until I starting taking nexium, I was taking it for heartburn ,I would have heartburn about three or four time a week, so I was taking nexium for that, but all the side affects that I have had I will take the heartburn any day.
Yes I had the endoscopy and yes the doctor said that I had gastritis, after I have been taking nexium for two years , and the doctor did not give me a thing for the gastritis , he just told me to stop the nexium and try the protonix and come back in four months, if I had gastritis taking nexium, protonix will not help me at all. I just think he want me to keep coming for the money .
from reading all the posts any one that is or have been taking ppi and go and take the endosocpy have gastritis, and it look like to me if the ppi was good for your stomach at all you would not have gastritis, and if it was helper you I do not think you would have gastritis at all.

I hear ya. I mean having gastritis WHILE on a PPI? Sounds a bit peculiar doesn't it? I have to wonder though. Is the gastritis from the medication itself or could it be from just having to digest pills in general every day (since those PPI's do come in capsules)?

Its hard to say. I want off them all. I wonder if anyone else who has had gastritis while on PPI's was able to successfully get off them and feel better??
