I'm not really new to running on the treadmill. I usually run between 10-20 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week. I always do a quick 5 minute stretching warmup beforehand. Yesterday, I ran 20 minutes using a 5.7 to 6.5 speed. I alternate between a 0 and 1 incline, 90% of the time at the 0 incline. Anyway, I've been having lower back pain all day today and most of the day on yesterday. I am overweight and trying to lose. Is there anything that I can do to avoid the back pain? Should I avoid running 2 days in a row in order to give my body a rest? Are there any steps that I am not taking to avoid back pain or injury? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you stretching? A good stretch routine before and after your workout is one way. They have tons of stretch videos.(yoga, which is EXCELLENT for backpain.) Plus, one way to strengthen the back is to lay on your tummy, put your hands on your forehead with your arms(really your elbow is out) out like you have wings(the top part of your hand is on your forehead, not your palms), keep you legs and tummy on the floor but lift your head and chest area off the floor like your doing sit ups but it's the other way around and your not lifting your abs. It really strengthens my back cause I do sit ups.hope this makes sense. You did say that you warm up but do you stretch before and after your workouts?

How old are your shoes? Are they for running? I used to have terrible pain in my left knee and hip while running. My trainer suggested new shoes. Wow what a difference!! I can now run for 45 minutes with no trouble.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I do stretch before and after my run. Probably not as much as I should. I spent a little extra time stretching this morning and I notice I'm not feeling any back pain. And my shoes? Well, yes, they are a bit old. Like a year old. I've always been told you need to change your walking/running shoes at least every 6 months. I've kept putting it off but I will definately invest in a new pair this weekend.
