 Hi Kim,
I had my first Hyalgan injection today (both knee's). It hurt like a cortisone shot would. Both knees are very sore tonight & swollen. They say it is temporary & to decrease standing & walking the first 72 hrs. You keep bandaids on it for 3 days is all. It was something that had to go through an approval process with my Ins company(took a wk) with letter from Rheumie.
This is a treatment that is available for people that have osteo, deteriation of knee joints & I believe shoulders too. It has a very high success rate & helps people where their cartlidge/meniscus has worn down but you don't have bone on bone yet. I wished I had known about this a year ago.
Anyway, you get 5 injections, 1 each week. It is suppose to help replenish synovial fluid that lets the joint glide more easily & provides cushion/& shock absorber like your own cartlige & meniscus does. If the injections help a person my Dr said I would see a difference in 5 wks to 3 mo. The shots can be repeated every 6 mo.
I need this to work so badly...last option left other than a total knee replacement in the near future.
Ask your Rheumy about it. Hope this info helps. I heard it from a nurse in the Dr's office if you can believe it. I'm just too tough for my own good is all...need to complain more I guess....LOL
