kute_lil_mama 12-03-2000, 06:03 PM Just wanting to know, is there anyone that has a child or knows of someone that has a relitive with ds that also has sleep apnea? If so, when does this occur? Is this appearant from birth? How can you tell if you should be concerned? Just wondering.
masmiles 12-29-2000, 12:20 PM My daughter has sleep apnea...it is not always apparent from birth, sometimes develops later. My child's is worse during different times of the year...we are in a bad season. It causes her to have restless sleep and to wake frequently during the night. She wants to sleep on an incline, so we frequently spend the night in the Lazy-Boy chair. Can't wait for the surgery, as I haven't had a full night's sleep since early October.

mslinda 02-21-2001, 11:43 AM my son, he is 11, has sleep apnea. they did sleep studies on him. He now sleeps with an O2 tube at night. He wasnt getting enough O2 when he was sleeping and would wake up gasping for air. I dont know of any surgery that would help since he is still growing, but the O2 does help.

She had her adenoids removed, the doctor felt that would help aleviate the apnea...it did for the most part, but she is still a horrible sleeper.

ImagineThat 02-28-2001, 03:41 AM Hi all I am knew to this so bear with me http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif,
I have a 10 mo.old lil girl who is in the hospital right know with a bout of respatory problems, the bad cold and congestion that just throws the lil ones for a loop,no rsv thank goodness, but she is having problems with keeping o2 sat's up especially while sleeping, when awake she runs in the mid 90's,sleeping she runs in the 85-90 range, has anyone ever had there kids monitored? She was a month early and was in the hospital for her first 2 weeks with the same problem ,she did have a small asd but now they dont hear the murmer and in a month she gets a echo to make sure it closed.I and the wife just wonder if she might have always ran on the low side while sleeping?
kute_lil_mama 02-28-2001, 02:19 PM I am puzzled also, because now my daughter is starting to cough and wheez at night and sometimes during the day. The docter says just get her some pedia care, but it isn't getting any better. Please, any suggestions?
ImagineThat 02-28-2001, 05:39 PM The wheezing started at about 7 mo.old and we had a nebulizer using allbuterol and chromlyn when wheezing was bad and just chromlyn the rest of the time as a prevenative. They still cant keep her sat's up without o2,and they been given her doses of pregdnosone and every 4 hrs allbuteral treatments along with the respitory thumping which she loves and falls asleep to.And they just gave her the shot of synergyn which is the innoculation for rsv which she will get every month till the rsv season is over at 1000 a shot I'm really happy I have insurance. So 5 days and it doesn't look like they are going to let her out yet,it's only tough on her brothers and sister they miss their lil sister.
kute_lil_mama 03-01-2001, 12:45 AM do you suppose I should get a docter that works on kids with special needs only? I like that pediatrician she has, but she doesn't seem to think that there is anything wrong with her. She says that it is just a little cold, but I am worried that she doesn't know what she is doing. What do you think? Should I fire her?
ImagineThat 03-01-2001, 01:04 AM I guess the big tip off for us was the little spot at the base of the neck where it meets the chest,if you notice that dipping in during breaths than its time for your doc to take action, and even waiting that long is a little too much,i'd say if it has lasted more than a week or you notice the dipping or labored type breathing it's time for a closer look. And if you are in a hmo tell her you want a referal to a specialist, they just dont offer it anymore.
By the way did ya see the quake that rocked us we were on the 6th floor in my daughter's hospital room, boy was that ever a ride http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
kute_lil_mama 03-01-2001, 03:39 PM yeah I saw that. I hope all is well. Well I will keep an eye on her throat, and thanks for the advice
Tifferbelle 03-03-2001, 09:57 PM I have a 7 year old daughter. We have found chiropractic to really help a lot with the sleep apnea. I was skeptical when it was first suggested to me but tried it anyhow. To my surprise it really worked!
mslinda 03-07-2001, 02:40 PM how is the chiropractic helping? how do u know if the sats are ok when sleeping? we only knew because of a sleep study that they were low and when put on the o2 they went up. please let me know....

mslinda 03-07-2001, 03:26 PM how do u know it is working? I didnt know our son's sats were low until he had a sleep study and was monitored. he now sleeps with O2 at night.

Tifferbelle 03-12-2001, 12:07 AM She probably doesn't have as big a problem as your child. We saw two doctors about the apnea and they both agreed that she had it but felt that they wanted to wait awhile to see if she would improve as she got older before they ordered a sleep study. Neither one felt she was in iminent danger. I guess I really don't have any scientific evidence that the chiropractic is helping but I know it is. She sleeps soundly without the big gaps and gasps in her breathing. She isn't so tired during the day anymore and she doesn't just drop off to sleep frequently like she used to. She's also just generally more agreeable now that she's sleeping better.
kute_lil_mama 03-12-2001, 12:44 PM That sounds interesting. My daughter is 6 months old and just started wheezing and snoring at night. But even when she is awake, she kinda sounds congested. People always think she is sick. I was wondering if your children had problems breathing while they were awale too. Just wondering.
kute_lil_mama 03-12-2001, 12:54 PM oh yeah, and how do you get a docter to recommend chiropracters for this type of thing?
Tifferbelle 03-12-2001, 03:15 PM Yeah, Audrey was often congested when she was awake although it's gotten better as she's gotten bigger. It's really important for Down's kids to see an Ear Nose and Throat Dr. regularly. Audrey has tubes in her ears now and that helps with the drainage and the sinus congestion. It's also improved her hearing. Her hearing had gotten really poor. But it immediately improved when she got her first set of tubes. Some kids also have enlarged tonsils. Audrey does but the surgery to remove them is too risky for her since she is also a heart patient. You might also try a cool mist humidifier in her room at night when she's asleep, just make sure you leave her bedroom door open. Oh, and most doctors won't recommend chiropractic since it's considered alternative medicine. Check with your insurance company to see if chiro is covered. Mine doesn't cover it so we have to pay for it ourselves but fortunately we have a relative who is a chropractor and he gives us a good deal.
kute_lil_mama 04-19-2001, 11:03 PM Thanks for that information. That is really helpful. Blessings to you and yours, Nikky
