I read somewhere that you can get an upper endoscopy without being sedated or having general anethesia in your system. All they do is spray something in the back of your throat. Is this true cause I want to make sure my esophagus is ok but I am deadly afraid of being sedated and I'm allergic to general anesthesia. Someone please tell me.

Ive had the spray, can definitly recommend this method. It makes you gag when the tube is put down your throat, but soon the procedure becomes ok! Ive had it twice and on both occasions ive been out of Hospital pretty quickly.

Its not General Anesthesia. The sedation just relaxes you and you close your eyes. I am one who does not like to be to sleep but this is relatively easy. The spray on the throat method is quite uncomfortabke i hear. good luck whatever you decide.

it is ridiculous to go thru anything like this unsedated! dumb, dumb, dumb. Now whether they put you to sleep I totally doubt. I am pretty sure it is NOT like anesthesia they give during a major operation...so don't think that.
They have methods of making you unaware of what is happening without putting you totally asleep just in case someone is allergic to anesthetics.
I say go for as much memory blocking as possible. Cause you never know when it might hurt.
My sis was given meds to make her unaware during her colonoscopy--based on body weight. She is pretty small.
Well, they didn't give her enough and she said it was the most painful thing she ever went thru.
After crying and begging them, they finally gave her enough to put her out!
Can you imagine?
So you need to be out of it---in my opinion....for any of these invasive procedures.

I strongly second Grandma intense post!!
Don't do this without something to put you out lightly.
I also had a colonoscopy without being put out or -just a sedative, which did nothing and it was more painful than giving birth 10 times all at once!!
Do not do this. Please there are meds that will not put you so far under as a General would, it's not risky and I'm not one for meds but would never do this without; Ive had it done twice and had no problem afterwards with meds in my system.
good luck.

You can relax...An endoscopy is nothing like a colonoscopy, so no worry. No general anesthetic is needed.
The throat spray is an anesthetic and it works just fine. I felt nothing but a little movement in there with mine. Inform the doctor that you need him/her to be sure that you feel no pain, and make sure that he/she waits until the anesthetic has worked.
You should do fine.

I'm a quite nervous person, so I freaked out with the spray. I just hate being frozen up, either getting that done or at the dentist. They put the tube through your nose and down into your throat (or further depending on your problem) and it doesn't hurt, but you can sometimes feel the tube moving around in your throat, but you don't generally gag. I didn't have any sedation or General Anesthetic, and I survived.

Do all endoscopy's have a tube going through the nose? I don't remember that just a mouth piece being put in and the spray.

they go down your throat not your nose

The nose and throat are connected. It is entirely possible that the tube will go up the nose and down into throat. Or it may go directly into the throat. Depends on the doctor. Really in the end, who cares.

have you seen the size of the scope they use there is no way it is fiting up your nose
