My nephew, Rafael, is 13 years old and hasn't learned how to spell or read (except his name). Are there any spelling/reading learning aides that will help his parents teach him?
My sister is thinking about ordering "Hooked on Phonics", but she isn't sure that's the best thing for him.
Thank you for any information that will be helpful.

My 7 year old has recently started reading simple words and short sentences. I recommend the book "Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome" by Patricia Logan Oelwein. Hope that helps.

My daughter is 15 years old, and can only read the letters in her first name. We have used the Hooked on Phonics to try to teach her, plus many other games ect.... She still only knows those letters in her name. Where did you find the book Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome. We come from a small community, and have no access to book stores ect... Is there an address where we could send off for it at? I had felt like maybe this was just something that she wasn't going to learn, so we had basically decided to focus on teaching her other things if she wasn't going to learn to read, but now that I read this, I am feeling like maybe there is still a little hope for her. Please let me know where to find this book at. Thanks!!!

I checked 3 different online booksellers and they all have the book. Amazon.com was the least expensive. I'll also give you the contact info for the publisher: Woodbine House,6510 Bells Mill Road, Bethseda, MD 20817. 1-800-843-7323. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the information. I'll order it for my sister and her husband from amazon.com and I'll be sure to post how it works for Rafael.
Thanks again!
