Here's my bcp history in a nutshell...
Started on OrthoTricyclen 4 years ago when I was 18. Did well with it, no problems. Took it for about 2 1/2 years.
My obgyn wanted me to try Ortho LO when it came out. The whole year I was on it I would always bleed during sex if the sex took place the week before my period. I finally told my obgyn about it and he switched me back to Trinessa (generic of OrthoTricyclen).
In April of this year I asked him to switch me because I was becoming really depressed and crying easily and thought it could be due to the pill. He put me on Yasmin. I took it for the months of May and June. In June my "problem" came back and I bled during sex a week before my period.
I didn't want to deal with that bleeding again so I started taking Trinessa again in July. Had sex July 4th, everything was fine. Period came July 19-24 like it should've...had sex the 29th, it was fine....2 days later spotted a little bit for a day (figured it was breakthrough bleeding since it's only my 2nd month of being on Trinessa again). Then I had sex last night and I bled during it. Went to the bathroom and wiped, the bleeding then stopped.
I went to my doctor today. He seems to still think it is hormone related. He told me to take one more month of Trinessa and see what happens next month. I'm really just terrified it is something like cervical cancer even though my last pap smear in Oct. was normal. The obgyn says if it was cervix related the blood would be brown and it would start right after sex. It does start during sex but it's usually red or pink in color. Please someone, anyone, help me understand why this is happening to me.

since you had been doing fine on the trinessa when you first started it it is probably just all the switiching around that is affecting your hormones. it doesnt sound like anything related to cervical cancer, especially since you had a clear pap test. has your doctor examined your cervix for anything abnormal that could explain the bleeding after sex? its probably just hormonal and with more time for your body to adjust you should be fine. hope that helps

No, he hasn't really done anything since he seems to believe it is pill related. He told me if I have the bleeding again next month then call him and he's going to switch me to Ovcon. I really don't want to switch again though. If it doesn't work this time I think I'm going to go off of bcp's completely and have him examine this further. I don't know what else to do. But I've been thinking...the bleeding a I had a few nights ago during sex was different than before...it wasn't a whole lot...like it usually is right before my period. I think I have just gotten myself so worked up about this and I'm so scared every time I have sex that maybe there just wasn't enough lubrication last time. Because I had sex twice last week, just days apart. The first time I had no problems and the second time I did. It just doesn't make sense.

After reading through other posts on the board now I'm thinking maybe it is a cervical erosion? I was on OrthoTricyclen for a few years, and apparently high dosages of estrogen are the cause of these erosions. Ugh, I don't know...my doctor never mentioned that as a possibility.

Has your Dr taken any vaginal swabs to rule out infection? Bleeding after sex can also be a sign of infection and may be red or pink in colour. You should ask for a physical exam to check for erosion, polyps, inflammation and also ask him to take swabs. He shouldn't just switch your pill without doing the other investigations first. If it is an infection it can be easily cleared up with antibiotics.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Nope. I figured he would do an exam when I went to his office on Friday, but he didn't. Would there be other symptoms if it were infection?
I find it odd that for the longest time this bleeding ONLY happened if I had sex right before my period. That's what always made me believe it was somehow pill-related. Then it again happened with Yasmin. Trinessa was the only pill I ever took that I didn't have problems with. Maybe this time around it's just b/c this is only my 2nd pack of Trinessa and it hasn't fully kicked in yet? I do think I need a pill with a stronger dose, like Trinessa. Does that sound likely?

Well, you would not necessarily have any other symptoms if it were an infection.
I would want to rule that out first before deciding to switch again. It could be pill related, but in my opinion your Dr has not even examined you or done anything else to establish the cause. Also, you say the bleeding is different this time. How does he know what it is without even looking at you? I personally would not be happy with that sort of service.
Anyway I hope you get the problem solved soon.
Good luck.

Oh I totally agree I should have had an exam. I guess on Friday I was worried sick and since he didn't feel the need to examine or anything I was a bit relieved and thought ok, maybe it IS the pill. Now I've had time to think about it and I'm worried all over again, not to mention scared to death to have sex. The last time I had sex I will admit I only did it to see if I would bleed....bad idea. My sex drive is non existent anyway and this just adds to the whole mess.

Well you will get it sorted out. Maybe see another Dr or go back to the other one and tell him what you want.
Good luck.

Yeah I'm going to see what happens next month since that will be my 3rd month on Trinessa. If it happens again I will definitely be going back to my doctor or finding a new one. I'm just going to pray it doesn't happen again.

My doctor put me on Lo Ovral (generic form) to control bleeding and endo, and I did the exact same thing as you the week before my period, only after sex. The third pack of pills, it didn't happen and hasn't since. Some pill have a greater % of bleeding rates, you probably need a stronger pill. I always hated TRI type pills anyway! Monophasic has been the best for me.
I am switching pills, not because of bleeding, because Lo Ovral has worked great at controling my periods and pain, but because it is making me a
b!@*#! I am going to try Mircette (generic) it has a low % of breakthru bleeding. If that doesn't work for me, I am going to do the Mirena.

Hmm...interesting. It happened to me the whole year I was on Ortho Lo, that is why I switched back to Trinessa. And for the first time it happened on Trinessa. I believe it is just my body adjusting though, as it was only my 2nd pack. What do you think? I should be ok next month?

Listen, I know you're freaking out because you think something may be horribly wrong. But I'm telling you - and others have told you on this board and on the other one - that all of your weird bleeding symptoms are pill-related. There is nothing medically wrong with you except that you're on the pill. I have literally never met a single women on BCP who has not had some degree of spotting at some point during their use of the BCP.
It does not matter when it happens, that's irrelevant. The fact that you're on the pill, and that you have switched a few times in a short period of time, means that you're going to have spotting. For how long or how often or whatever, I have no idea. But the fact is - FACT - is that you are on the pill and you'd better expect some spotting and breakthrough bleeding to happen at times while you're on the pill.
I never, ever, ever, EVER had spotting before I started on the pill. And that is because your hormones get all weirded out by the pill and that causes the lining of your uterus to sometimes shed at strange times.
Look, it just happens sometimes, ok? For you to sit here and freak out thinking there is something really really wrong with you is pointless. You don't have cervical cancer. You are a women on the pill who gets spotting. That's about as common as a woman on the pill having cramps and bloating before, during and after her period. Or losing her sex drive. Or her hair. Or getting depressed and crying. Do you see my point? Stop freaking out, there's absolutely NOTHING wrong, ok?

I understand that but for the first 2 1/2 years I was on birth control I never ever had one instance of spotting or breakthrough bleeding. It just seems odd to me that it is only during sex...no other time, ever.

Like I said, it doesn't matter how long you were on and didn't have the problem. Any time you are on the pill and have some kind of spotting or bleeding, it's because of the pill.
What you need to understand is that the pill messes with your hormones to an extreme extent. Your uterus is supposed to shed its lining when the hormone levels drop to a certain level. Because of the chemical nature of the pill, some women just happen to experience fluctuations between their monthly bleed, which causes the spotting. It can happen anytime, regardless of when you started taking the pill. ANY TIME. And you said that you've switched pills several times. That can also cause problems, as well. It doesn't matter that you were on one of them and it didn't happen before, because all your body knows is that the hormones are going all screwy due to the changes, and it causes the spotting.
Quit worrying about cervical cancer. Why do you think they send you for a pap smear every year? It's to test for cervical cancer. When the doc does the test, they scrape tissue directly from your cervix. If it were cancerous, it would show up on the pap. You've said all of your tests have been normal. That means there is no reason for you to believe that you have cervical cancer.
I'm just saying, you've been posting this question repeatedly here and on the other board, and it's been over the course of a few months. Everyone has told you exactly the same thing, there is no new story here. Your spotting is due to the pill. Period. End of story. That's all there is to it. There is no reason for you to think otherwise.

I apologize for posting a lot about this problem, I've just been concerned and it didn't seem like too many people told me they were having the same problem. Everyone had spotting at times other than during sex, which is why I was a bit alarmed. I suffer from hypochondria and when things like these go wrong with me I always think the worst and seek a lot of reassurance. Try googling bleeding during sex and read the results, you'll see why I've worried myself to death over this.
