Well finally got to see my new doctor and he was shocked I was on lovastatin. Said it was nothing but crap & for me to stop taking it immediately!!! Said the 10mg of zocor I was orginally taking I would have to take 40mg of lovastatin to get the same benefit & that was even doubtful.
Now what shocked me more was when he said he wasn't a fan of statins in general but when its genetic (which mine is) & diet & exercise doesn't help than he believes a "low" dose of a decent statin is in order but he believes that proper diet & exercise is the key for non-genetic high cholesterol. Says wait for my test to come back and we would go from there. I bet statin reps love this guy :D

Wow Goldenboys, I can hardly believe my eyes. Now there is a doctor I would like to call my own. I do agree with him but perhaps I am just someone who can not take Lovastatin without having terrible side effects. I know that after the Lovastatin experience I would not take any statin. I do try to control my cholesterol but with more natural ways and so far it seems to work for me. Glad for you that you have found a doctor who will work with you. Good luck:)

Looks like some doctors are now starting to really read the reports, and not just the conclusions reached and reported by the drug companies. I suspect there will be more like him when the UCSD Statin publishes their final report in December.

goldenboys,
What your doctor was saying is that lovastatin is "crap" because it is too weak... it IS.
He also believes that nobody should take a statin if he can lower his cholesterol to less risky levels by diet...he's right.
HE also implied that those who CANNOT lower their levels with diet and supplements and what have you (he calls these genetically high-cholesterol people) should take statins, and strong statins at that...he's right!
If you were to interpret correctly what he said, it is that he is about to recommend Zocor for you again. The decision, as it is alwways, is then yours.
He should not condemn that 10 mg. Lovastatin dose though UNTIL he has seen whatever results you are getting from it...some people do fairly well with a weak low dose statin...you might be one of them.

Yep he's a different doctor for sure and I do like him except that he is very conservative. Asked him for a refill of valium which I was taking for bouts of anxiety every now and then but he suggested yoga instead  . Oh well can't have everything. :)

You might try Magnesium for the depression as well as the cholesterol. Yoga might not be bad...but sometimes doctors go overboard.

I agree with you 100% Lenin (except about the Lovastatin). When I was taking the Zocor I was splitting to 5mg so I'll be anxious to see if I can get by on that amount although he did say hopefully I won't need to take anything but I doubt it.

NHone...I have bouts of anxiety with job interviews not depression. I do take magnesium already and once tried Yoga and just couldn't get into it. Seems when your suppose to let go and set your mind free my mind filled with everything from a to z :D

Try this on Doctor Yoga:
Doctor: "I think you need Zocor for that poor cholesterol."
You: "I think I'll try YOGA instead." :jester:
Let's see if he's consistent and applauds your decision! :D. There are good perks for prescribing a very pricey non-generic like Zocor but none for prescribing cheap, generic, tried-and-true diazapam!

Valium is great! I still can't understand why a low-dose Valium still isn't available over the counter. Quite a few people can certainly benefit. And nope, I doubt that yoga can serve as a suitable alternative.

I'd like to know as well why some of these new drs. have hissy fits if U ask for Diazepam. My old dr. had me on it, as when I get upset, my muscles tense right up, yet the last 2 drs. I had looked at me like I was a nut case for using it......
It's not like I use a large dose or need it to get thru my day, but I'll bet they wouldn't hesitate to prescribe a more expensive product to relieve the tension and muscle tightness......

In recent years the benzodiazepines have come in for a lot of bad press. There are nasty side effects, especially when benzodiazepines are used in high dosages. For more info, google "Benzodiazepines dangers".
Cheers,
Mark :)

It even extends to the sleeping medications. DALMANE was and is a very good CHEAP benzo sleeping med...but ask for it and doc will give you the same dirty "drug fiend" look you get from Valium...but AMBIEN, LUNESTA or SONATA at $3 a pill will make him smile like :)!
And of course, there NEVER was (and IS) a better sleeping pill than barbiturates or the far safer king of all feel goods, methaqualone (QUAALUDE,) although neither is a benzo.
Of note: Valium (diazapam) was the most widely used plarmaceutical in the world from 1970-1978...it is now not among the top 200. Has human physiology changed that much or are doctors paid much better to prescribe AMBIEN and LUNESTA...and therefore to badmouth benzos?
It really IS all about greed.

Mark, I know about the side effects, but like one dr. told me, if we knew what was in Tylenol we wouldn't take it. Every med has a side effect, some more then others, and what is good for one person doesn't agree with another person, like statins, but they still keep trying to push them on us.
I am highly sensative to meds., yet the Diazapam doesn't bother me, just relieves those cramped up muscles, yet I am extremely sensative to cholesterol meds., and the drs. keep trying to make me take them. As Lenin said, I smell some "Greed" here!! JMHO

One thing I can say about you Lenin is you are one funny person. I love reading when you post. Yea I can try the old Yoga response on him but I still won't get the valium.
