My 12 year old granddaughter has recently started her periods and they are quite heavy. As she loves swimming, and this is curtailing some of her events, her mum was wondering whether the contraceptive pill could be considered. Does anyone have any experience of this? We have been told you can reduce the periods to say 3 a year?

Hi Julia,
My daughter Sally has DS and is just 16yrs old. She has also suffered with very heavy periods. After consulting with our doctor it was decided to put her on the pill. It has certainly improved the situation considerably. Instead of having 4-5 days when her period is very heavy it has now been reduced to one or sometimes two days. As for the 3per year I think that might be worth looking into. They and us as parents have enough on our plates without all the extras that nature has to throw at them.
Good luck with your grandaughter, I hope it works out well for her, Jan

Thank you Jan for your reply which is appreciated.
I will pass your message on to my daughter.
Kind regards
Julia
