A while back I wrote about the autoimmune problem I am having. I was earlier diagnosed as having Menieres. It was very difficult in that it came on quickly about 6 months ago. However, a month ago I tested positive for what is called autoimmune vestibulopothy. I am being told that it is a blood disorder which is attacking my inner ear and causing hearing loss, tinnitus and imbalance. The past few months have been really tough.

What I want to know is if anyone else is taking chemotherapy for inner ear disorders. The chemo they will put me on is a mild dose and should have few side effects but it is still worrisome. Has anyone esle had experience with methelthextrate(?)?

Thanks

Well, now that you mention it, sometime ago I came into this article on the net where they talked about the treatment with methelthextrate for autoinmune diseases with great results.

Here is the post.

http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=370558

The complete article is in spanish, or was, I haven't check if it's still online, and actually it supposed to be a treatment for Meniere's, considering the syndrome as an autoinmune disease.

But, from what I've read, and now with your case, both are different stuff...

Anyway, according to the results of this study, the future looks bright for you, it gave great numbers in % of recovery, both in function, hearing loss, and balance, so I hope this stands true for you.

Keep it Up.

Stargrave,

I looked for the link you provided but it was long gone. Nonetheless, I really appreciate your willingness to help. Good luck to you.

Hi rcristal.

I found my post on Metrothexate(how is it spelled?), unfortunately I couldn't found the original article anywhere on the net...

Nevertheless, as I've said before, numbers look good, hope it really helps you.

Hello.

I just drop into an Article, written by a Mexican ENT specialist, regarding a new drug as treatment for MS. I won't post the name until green light from the board, but it appears that it is used for autoinmune diseases.

The article(wich is written in Spanish), talks about this new kind of treatment, in addition to the usual MS control therapy(low salt diet, diuretics, etc.), which came up after some recent investigations showed that MS was much more related to an autoinmune process, than to the hydrops in the vestibular system, as it was believed.

This seems to me, to be somehow connected with Scott's post about some new studies on VN, and all it's discussion, I believe someone mentioned something about this(the autoinmune factor).

Finally the point here is that the results were impressive, all the way from hearing recovery up to 83% of the patients, Ear fullness down in 91% of them, Tinnitus dissapearing in 69%, Vertigo receeding up to an 86% or even a 91%(mixing treatment with VRT), with the other 9% just having a mild(not incapacitating) vertigo sequel.

Of course this doesn't mean "Hey let's buy this drug and be happy", because this study was made with a lot of medical control and medical supervision, up to the point that the whole article is quite too technical for me, specially in some points.

And even if it really sounds like a new light of hope, I think we should research a little bit more about this, before claiming victory.

I don't know if someone in the board knew about this, and if it's of general interest for trying to translate the article, for posting it in here(I leave this to the board's moderators to decide)
