I have two children, one 15 and the other 9 but on the pregnancy of my second child my stomach muscles split and went numb down the center of my tummy.
Since then I've tried sit ups and even aerobics but cannot get my tummy down to shape.
Has anybody experienced this problem and can offer any advice to me at all please?

Firstly, I suspect the reason your tummy doesnt have good shape isnt due to the abdominals (which youre working with sit ups etc). It's rather due to your body fat. This is a common misconception that people have, hence why many end up doing 1000 sit ups every day and wonder why they never see their abs or have a decent waist.
Here's my advice:
1. Do more cardio (3-4 times a week). This will help raise your metabolism and burn fat. Look into a method of cardio called HIIT which is basically very intense cardio (bike/running/eliptical machine) for a short amount of time. HIIT is great for fat-burning.
2. Stick to the sit ups.
3. If you go to a gym, do exercises such as squats (and go to parallel with the barbell) which will work your core very well too. Search the net for proper form of a squat if you do decide to do it. Used properly, they're the best exercise you can do.
Do NOT underestimate the importance of weight training. It's the key to success.

Thanks for your advice Chopsky. :)
I did wonder why nothing changed when I did sit-ups. I'll look into that other information.

You have to work your stomach muscles like any other, slowly but surely. Also, there is no point attempting to increase your muscle strength without eating properly.
There are a number of lower and upper body stomach workouts you can do to help get your strength back. Start out with 5 a day and work yourself up. I recommend [DELETED] , the site helped me reduce the fat around my stomach area and get leaner abs.
Good luck, if you have any more questions please do reply!

Right on Chopsky...
I too have that problem as I just had my third C-Section. It's fat! No bones about it.... I just started back in the gym after my Doc's blessing. I'm doing spinning 2-3 days a week and weights 2-3 days a week. Also, I just started pilates - I heard it's great for the core!!
Good Luck!

my mom, after having her second child, had the same problem. she, years later found out that after giving birth, her abdominal wall never "closed" her dr, and ob some 29 years later diagnosed the problem, and sent her to a physical therapyst to work on closing the abdominal cavity. If your diet is clean, and your doing the right exercises, and thats not working, talk to your Dr, strange things sometimes happen after having children
