Amy used to have hair down to her butt, long pretty brunette hair. I finally had to cut it, to below her shoulders, and now I'm thinking of shaving her head!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/eek.gif No.....no, but geeeeeeeeeesh!! She won't let me brush her hair, she grabs me in a bear hug holding my arms down so I can't brush her hair, she grabs my hands and twists my thumbs to keep them out of reach, she moves out of reach every time I reach to brush her hair!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dizzy.gif And she's 13 now and is having major problems all of a sudden with oily hair and dandruff!! What's a Mom to DO????? HELP!!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif

Oh my gosh, I've got a ten year old with downs who does the same thing. She growls and holds her head when I try to brush her hair. When I stop for a minute, she runs and I end up chasing her around the house. It drives me up the wall. About the dandruff and oily hair-my other daughter had it at age 12 and it wouldn't go away for any kind of shampoo and then one day, it just stopped about 6 or 7 months later. Good luck!

My daughter is 5, soon to be 6. She usually doesn't like her hair to be brushed, but I started using a bar stool infront of the mirror and letting her use my makeup brushes and she seems to be much more tolerable to me brushing. Maybe a little makeup might interest the older gals.

Thank you both for your responses!! I feel so BAD for anyone struggling like I am, and it IS a true STRUGGLE, but so glad to hear it's not just me!! I've often wondered if the teachers at school think I've a neglectful parent because her hair is usually so half done!!
I sure hope you're right about the dandruff just going away one day. It's like looking at a major peeling sunburn to me, I just CAN'T leave it alone and AMY just CAN'T let me loosen and brush it away........we're at a stand off here! LOL
A good idea about putting her in front of the mirror with makeup brushes, Mom!! I know Amy likes looking at her reflection in the mirror. And she LOVES makeup. I'm going to give that a try!!

My sister went thru the same "anti hair brush" She is 18 and sometimes still doesn't like it. When she was little I would sit on the floor with her and wrap my legs around her and brush it. After a while she got use to it and stop running around and all the other things. She has even let me perm it when she was younger, in front of the tv.
For the flaking get some TEA TREE SHAMPOO. Paul Mitchell has a great one, probably find some other brand at Wal-Mart. Wash her hair first in the tub and let it sit in there while she plays. vinegar also is a good rinse after you wash it. Yes I use to do hair every day and have seen alot of it. It is like the old cradle cap days.
Good luck.

NOW it's MY turn to say, OMIGOSH!!! You sure called it!! The dandruff just disappeared!!! Nothing I bought was working and it was just so embarrassing and then it just all cleared up!!! Amazing! We should all be so lucky!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bouncing.gif
As to the person who talked about sitting on the floor behind her sister and wrapping her legs around her to brush her hair,THANK YOU! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif We all went to work on Amy hair, using your technique, and by the time school started her hair was beautiful and now, after a brief skirmish, she gives up and lets us do her hair. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif What a relief!!
thanks all!

Glad I was of some help. Julie (18) is now letting her hair grow long and loves putting her own clips and bands in it.
