Hello again to all. I was just wanting some info on sleep apnea. Austin is 9 years old and has been a HORRIBLE sleeper forever. He is extremely restless and always tossing and turning. He also likes to sleep with his legs crossed indian style and sitting up arched over on my back or hip. Does any of this sound familiar from others. Or is this just his weird habbit. Anyway the dr. is going to do a sleep study on him to check for sleep apnea so I was just wanting some insight from other parents. Any information is appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi Sheri, this is Robin, mother of Tanner, who is 5 and sleeps weird too. Cross legged indian style and with his body folded over in front of him with his head laying flat on the mattress. Tanner too is a restless sleeper, he is all over the bed, just rotating like a wind mill all night long. I have even found him standing up and his head laying on the mattress. I'll be interested to know what you find out.

Hi Austins Mom..I Hve a 6 year old son with DS..he als had sleep apnea...We took him to the ENT and was told that the sleep apnea was causing him to stop breathing for short periods of time..I'm not sure but maybe youre son is going into those positions during sleep time because he can breathe better...My son had his tonsils and adnoids removed...this has helped greatly with his sleeping problems actually he doesnt have them anymore...I dont know if youre son has had his tonsils and adnoids removed but if not I would check with youre ENT..Annie

I Austin's mom! I thought that was only my name or so it has been for the past 23 years. I too have an Austin with DS, but he is soon to turn 24 yrs. I would definitely check with your ENT, but it is very common. The best advice I can give you is No.1, don't have him sleep with you, and No.2 don't worry over his sleep positions, he will change if uncomfortable. In all these years, I have learned one very important lesson: Allow your child the right to be himself. There are some things that we "normal" people try to assert on our kids that really are not an issue for our kids to learn or do. We do this because it is "normal". Sometimes we need to just sit back and say OK it is perfectly alright for you to sit like that, OK for you to dress like that, OK for you to watch the same movie 50 times, and so on. It is amazing to think back through the years at all the things we fretted over about the future and now that it is here, we just have this wonderful, handsome, polite young man with a heart as big as Texas, who works 40 hours a week at Albertson's and loves every minute of it! Love to compare stories sometime.

First off, I just wanted to say thank you to Hazel and to Austin's mom 2, for answering my post. We never ended up having the sleep study done. I don't know if I will pursue it or not. I was reading though about sleep apnea and it was saying that it can cause permanent problems for downs children. I didn't know this. I believe it was under Dr. Len Leshin's site for sleep apnea. So... now I am considering doing the study again. I'm not that conserned with the way he sleeps, just only if there was a medical reason for it or problem and now that I read that site about it possibly causing permanat problems I'm somewhat concerned. If anyone has anymore information it will be greatly appreciated. Also, how bad would it be for him to have his tonsils and adenoids removed at this age of him fixing to be 10 years old? Thanks again. God Bless you all!

Hello! My son Timothy also sleeps like that! I have also found him sleeping in the standing up position on edge of the bed!I too worry about sleep apnea. I have heard of the problems it can cause because of the lack of oxygen. I have told his docter I felt he needed his tonsils and adnoids out but she only tells me they are normal looking, only big in appearance because the inside of his mouth is shallow. My son sounds horrible at night. He gets quiet then he gasps for air. Then he will change positions again. Maybe i should find another DR to deal with this? I know he cant be getting enough sleep and maybe that can explain alot of his behavior problems he has. God Bless

Motherof3,
First off, hello. I agree with you on your opinion to maybe go see another doctor about this. How old is Timothy and how long has his symptoms been there? I definately would get a second opinion. It's nice to hear from other parents with the same problems and concerns. It helps to know we're not alone. God Bless and keep us posted.

My son is 6 years old. He has done this all his life. He get sick easily and was very sick at the age of 5 months...after that it seemed like we were always rushing him to the hospital for breathing problems and I didnt pay much attention to how he breathed at night. I use to swear to everyone that he would stop breathing while he was sleeping but he also sounded bad because he was sick so much. He has this horrible barking sound he makes at night, or if he is playing to hard. He still does the same thing everynight...snores, gets quiet, gasps for air, then changes positions. He is seeing his docter today because he is sick again, I am going to mention this to her again. Maybe this time she will listen. :(

Mother of 3,
Hey! Well I just wanted to say hello and that I got your reply. How is Timothy feeling and what did the doctore say today. And what did they say about the sleep apnea and your concern? Austin goes back next Wednesday to his Pulmonologist and I guess I'll see what they say then. They are the ones that requested the sleep study and then we never had it done. So, I guess I'll see what they think this time. You know how that goes, it's always who you see that day. Because, I had mentioned the idea of a sleep study because of sleep apnea years ago and they told me he was sleeping that way just out of habbit. Then 6 months ago I saw a different doctor and she is the one who mentioned it to me, I'd gave up on mentioning it to them. So... we'll see. Anyway, please post back soon and let me know what was wrong with Timothy and what all they said about the sleep apnea. God Bless!!

Hello, turns out Timothy has a very bad virus and is back on nebulizer 3 times a day. I was hoping we could put that machine away for good, but that is unlikely. As for the sleep problems, his docter just nodded it off. So, I called his genetics specialist that is 50 miles away and they now have a DS specialist there that wants to see Tim. They only deal with problems that are seen in children with DS. I am hoping to get him there within the next couple weeks. I will keep you posted. I am so glad to have a place to talk about these issues. Hope all goes well with you. Let me know what happens at your visit. God Bless.

Mother of 3,
Hello. Sorry to hear about Timothy. What kind of virus does he have and does he have asthma. We know all about the nebulizer machine and the puffer inhalers. How long does he have to take the breathing treatments for? I hope he feels better soon. Where do you live? We live in Florida. That's GREAT, that you have a center nearby that specializes in downs. That will be wonderful for you and Timothy. I can't wait to hear what they have to say. Personally, which I'm not a doctor either, but... he sounds just like a child with sleep apnea. He has all the symptoms. But... who knows. Let me know when you get his appointment scheduled for, I'm anxious too.
Austin isn't feeling very well right now either. He's been complaining of his throat hurting for the past day and he's clogged up. Who knows, probably will be a trip to the doctor too. I try to give his body a chance to fight it off first some. He hasn't started running any fever at all yet, so... we'll see. Anyway, I'll keep you posted on his pulmonology appointment after we go next week and make sure you do the same.
Your log in name is mother of 3, so... I'm assuming you have 3 children. What are they and their ages? I have Austin who is going to be 10 on May 3rd, and I have a duaghter who was 8 October 21st. They are 18 months apart.
Well, I've babbled on enough. Talk to you soon. Keep posted on how Timothy is feeling too.
God Bless To All!!!

Hi Austin's mom. Timothy does have asthma. He has to take treatments 3 times a day now. He just has a bad chest cold. He goes to the specialist March 29th. So now we just have to wait! I hope Austin feels better soon. I have 3 children. Another boy, Aaron, he is 4, and a little girl, Emily, who is 2. Emily is sick now. Tim brings most of the colds from school. There are only 5 in his class so when one is sick they all get sick...then we all get sick at home too!I am anxious to hear what the specialist has to say about Tim, before we always seen the genetics Dr., I am glad the have DS clinic now, that focuses on only their related problems! I will just be glad when we can fix the situation, youd think after 6 years of not sleeping all night,I'd be use to it! When Tim dosent sleep well neither do I.Hope to hear from you soon! Take Care and God Bless.

Hi Austin's MOM,
My daughter is 10. She has Down's Syndrome and Diabetes. She had terrible sleep habits. I would even catch her sitting straight up in bed totally asleep. She was snoring heavily. The doctors said she had sleep apnia. Noticed her snoring when she was put to sleep for other proceduress. They wanted to do a sleep study but I never went. Her tonsils were constantly inflamed. So they took them out. She is sleeping much better. No loud snoring. Havent really notice her sitting up sleeping. She doesnt wake up as much in the middle of the night either. They usually send them home the same day as surgeory. But Marissa was different because she has Diabetes. She ended up staying for 10 days with an IV. But the 3rd doctor I went to about her ears and tonsils said it would be best to take them out now. Hope this helps in some way.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to let you know about my daughter Mary Beth. She was a very loud sleeper and I even thought she had sleep apnea since her father and grandfather have it. But we had her tonsils removed and also tubes in her ears. She was and still is very restless. However I recently noticed something. She would constantly fall out of bed and end up with bruises. Ended up putting a foam pad on the floor! Even padded her dressers, etc. She recently had the tubes replaced in her ears and she has stopped falling out of bed! She actually lays and sleeps better! I haven't asked the doctors about it, but I don't need to ask because I saw the improvement. She also has a hearing impairment, and has had several ear infections. Not saying this will solve any ones problems, but it was amazing to see the difference 1st with the removal of her tonsils and 2nd replacing the tubes in her ears.

Hello, my 1 year old son does the same thing during night. I suspect its because of the the congestion that builds when he is sleeping. In fact the congestion is so bad duing early morning that we have hold him in different angels to help him breath and sleep. Duing daytime also he can't have nap for more than 45 min.-1 hour. It seems that sleeping on back worsens it so he flips himself on the tummy.

Wow!!! Hi, Utw!! And to Austin's Moms too!! I have to say what a big surprise to find that falling asleep with legs crossed Indian style and body laying across them, head on mattress appears to be a Downs' habit! My Amy has been doing this for YEARS!! She's had her tonsils out but not her adenoids and she's a very still sleeper, not all over the place, but I can't tell you how many times I've come in to find her "folded in half" like that, and her legs cold as ice!! I always get her stretched out, worrying about cutting off circulation and all.
And the watching a movie 50 times!! I had to laugh out loud for real!!! That's my AMY!! And she'll rewind the same scene over and over on the vcr until she gets it down pat, then she'll move on to the next scene.........UNTIL....SHE'S GOT THE WHOLE MOVIE MEMORIZED IN HER HEAD!! Then she can turn on the movie at the start, turn her back on the television and play every scene out, play by play without looking back at the movie even ONCE!!! No mistakes!!
Our kids are just so AMAZING!!! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif

Hi, Sheri,
On age and having tonsils and adenoids out, the older the person, the harder it is on them. Don't ask me why, but doctors will tell you the same. And as my point of reference, Amy's tonsils had to be removed when she was 12 months to prepare for open heart surgery, she hurt for about 2 hours, then back to eating. Another daughter, Brenna, had her tonsils out when she was 13, she was in her own private hell for about 4 days ..........the doctor prescribed Tylenol #3's for her pain but she couldn't swallow the pills for the pain, couldn't eat, didn't want to drink even. The older they are the harder it is to recuperate.

Hi,
Until she had her "grossly enlarged" tonsils out, Amy used to make so much noise breathing that she disrupted Mass on Sundays! Everyone would turn around to see where all the noise was coming from. (Actually, I had gotten so used to it that I didn't realize how loud she was getting until I saw three rows of people turning around to check her out.)After the surgery the snoring-like noise she would make stopped.

WOW!!! This sounds really frightening!! This must be something new....does Justin have a major problem with his tongue?
Amy (13) had problems with letting her tongue stick out when she was an infant, but we taught her to keep it in. That's the only realy problem I can remember Amy having.
