View Full Version : Can TMJ dysfunction cause problems elsewhere?

Hello fellow friends, I was wondering if anyone can help me out here?

Here goes my complaint:
I have occasion ear pain, fullness feeling, and sometimes a ache or stabbing.
My face near my jaw will tighten, and then the bug crawling sensation starts,
this only lasts for a few seconds.
Migraine headaches on the left side (same side and jaw and face problems)
these are always mid-cycle or before period.
left sided neck pain
left sided shoulder pain and stiffness
my jaw does pop, atually both do
I get dizziness when I eat crunchy things
These feelings all started about 8 years ago with the migraines
6 years ago the facial problems started
Everything started after a minor fender bender
After reading on the internet about the facial feelings and ear pain, I have put myself in a tizzy because of reading that MS causes these sensations.
I have had so much anxiety over this in the last 6 years that I finally decided to have a brain MRI done in April this year.
Everything was normal, except for a extensive sinus infection.
Now for the last 5 years, I have developed what I call as buzzing sensations under my skin, the appear at different places, at different times, I have no weakness, no numbness, no vision problems, I can tolerate the heat, in fact, hot baths and warm weather make me feel good, and I don't have any fatique, I suffer from insomnia though, probably because of worrying about these feelings. Can TMJ cause these feelings elsewhere in the body, or could I just be suffering from health anxiety? Anyone have any thoughts, please let me know, I'm so tired of worrying about this. Thanks:wave:

tmj can affect the rest of the body - but since you mention you were in a minor fender bender - did you ever get treated or checked for a slight whiplash to the cervical spine - the back of your neck at the base of your head? A misalignment there due to a sudden impact, even if it was slight and did not cause any pain at the time, can also cause tmj like symptoms. Just a thought.

Thelma-Louise, thanks for your reply. I did have an x-ray done about 4 years ago at the chiroprators office, he said that the c-1 looked a little misaligned. Could this cause all these weird sensations though? I never had a headache before this fender bender happened, about 3 months later I started with these migraine type headaches, only on occasions, then only two years after the headaches, came the facial feelings and ear pain, followed by the neck stiffness and shoulder pain, as the years went by they have become more intense, and I can definently say that they are hormone provoked, from keeping a log of them. I have been going to PT, and so far it has seemed to lessen the facial pressure/tingling in the jaw area. But could the other feelings be connected to this when they appear in different areas of the body? And how might I ask? Thank you for your thoughts !!!! Take care:)

Oh I definitely think a misaligned C1 can cause most if not all your symptoms. I am living proof of it. I have so many strange and wierd symptoms not normally associated with tmj but I am getting the most relief from these symptoms (ear ringing, facial tingling, numbness, ear pain and pressure, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, nausea and eye pain) by seeing a NUCCA or Upper Cervical chiro. Apparently when my jaw suddenly deviated way back when (no one seems to know why) it pushed against the back of my neck and pushed the C1 one off to the left which in turn affects your central nervous system (tingling, spasms, pain) and cervical spine (forward or tilted head posture, one leg shorter than the other or one shoulder higher/lower than the other even if you don't feel or notice it). While most chiro's can treat the C1, NUCCA or Upper Cervical Chiros specialize in only the C1 - the actual treatment is much different than what a regular chiro will do. You can search the web for a NUCCA or Upper Cervical chiro in your area or if there are none, at least look for a chiro that specializes in tmd. Its worth a try. It might be covered by health ins (not dental) if you have it. I Wish you well. I wish we were all well and didn't need this forum.

Thanks so much Thelma, I'm going to try to find a NUCCA chiro in my area. It just seems weird how all this started occuring, and has eventually gotten worse over the years. Thanks again!!!

I have the same symptoms you have except I don't have the eye pain. Ears, back of head humming, etc. I also have muscular tmj disorder according to the Mri and the new tmj dentist I'm seeing made me a splint and its not working so he said its got to be in my head or neck. I have been seeing a regular chiro that has helped my neck muscles a lot, but there is a cervical chiro in the next town that I'm thinking about.

I have an appoint with an osteopathic Dr. on Mon. that my tmj dr. wants me to see so I'll see what she says first.

How many appoints have you had with your nucca chiro so far and how long did it take to see results? Did he do a special x-ray?

Yes I hope we can all find some relief and the sooner the better!!:)

I've been going to the NUCCA chiro for 7 mos now, 2x weekly and it took almost a month before I saw positive improvement. Actually for the first couple of weeks I thought it got worse but he explained that my C1 had gotten basically stuck off center and was resisting his adjustments. So I figured I would at least give him 2 months before giving up. But quite suddenly I woke up one morning and the nausea was finally gone & my appetite returned, then the ear ringing went away a few days later. It took about 10 weeks before my jaw and neck seemed to have less pain and moved a bit more freely. I still get bouts of the nausea and eye pain but when I do it doesn't last more than a day or so. He took a head and neck x-ray similar to what a regular chiro does but he drew lines on it and measured the distance between the C1 and other parts of the face, jaw, chin and neck to determine if the C1 is out of alignment and how much. He also did a Surface EMG that provided an image of the spine and highlights which muscle groups are stressed or affected by the misalignment - again to help him determine his adjustments. I actually had my last appt last week - we're taking a break until the new tmj dentist I am seeing can complete the customized splint he is making for me - b/c what's happening now is the chiro does his adjustment and then the snap on denture/splint I am wearing throws it back out. So its kind of pointless to keep getting adjusted if it can't hold for more than a day or so. So I get the new splint in Sept and then go back to the chiro at the same time while the splint is being adjusted. Sounds promising but only time will tell if works. I have often wondered if I should see an osteopath - since now I am being told this started with my neck and not my jaw first. Please let me know how that went. Thanks.

Interesting, I go on Mon for my eval and will post what she has to say. I also have a splint on the upper denture, but its killing me and took it out yesterday. I'm bringing it to my appoint. with her too as the tmj dentist wants me to get adjusted with it in, so we shall see.
Is your a top or bottom splint?

The new dentist is making me both. Should be fun, no? The first dentist made me wear one on the top, the next dentist made me wear one on the bottom. This dentist says I need both. Guess I gotta give him credit for trying to be creative and doing something different.

So your getting two made now. I just spent $650 for the top one and I haven't worn it for 3 days and I feel better without it. Unless he can do
something with it , it won't be going back in. I really hope he doesn't think
I need a bottom one now. I can't afford to pay for his trial and errors and
I don't expect to as he holds himself out as a tmj specialist and should
know what type of splint I should of needed in the beginning.
Keep us posted on how your splints work, I hope they do. I couldn't imagine wearing both at the same time. My top one opens up my mouth so much now its tireing just to have it in.

Hello,

I have the following symptoms.

My symptoms are mostly on the right side.
Right Ear fullness and pain in the ear and sometimes stabbing pain.
Dizzy feeling and a feeling of off balance.
Jaw pain on the right side and pain in front of the ear on the face.
Pain in the temples area.
Pain above the ear and under the ear around the ear.
Pain in the neck area mostly on the right, straight below the ear.
Eye pressure mostly in the right eye.
Pain in the chest area and around the ribs, tender to touch and painful in some areas when pressed a little hard.
Overall weakness in the body.
When I have a heavy meal, I get a sence of fullness in the ear.
Dizzy when I eat hard things..
And definetely "anxiety" in trying to understand what's going on in the body...which is the bad part.
Hope this helps...
Others also please post how your symptoms are..which would definetely be helpful.
Have a blessed day.

Thanks...

Your symptoms sound all too familiar.

I also have all right side symptoms that have been growing worse of the past 3 years.

Fullness behind and under the right ear.
Pressure or fullness feeling behind my right eye.
Fullness, on the right side of my neck with the feeling of swollen glands.
Much cracking and crunching from C1 to C5 or 6 which is discomforting but not really painful.
Headaches
Strange ache in and or around my right shoulder and shoulder blade.
Vary sore first rib on the right side.
Some dizziness, lots of fatigue.

I do grind my teeth at night…. But thought everyone does..?

Sleeping is a big challenge. The mere weight of my head on my pillow causes big time pressure of fullness feeling on my neck.

I’ve had many test done .. MRI’s , CT Scans, Blood Work, Heart, lung… nothing has been found… which I guess is good.

Unfortunately my discomfort is only growing worse. Anxiety over this compounds the problem.

I’ve tried Chiro’s, massage, antibiotics, pain meds, muscle relaxants, injections, had my septum straightened, had a wisdom tooth (on the right side) pulled… and nothing has helped.
I’ve seen 7 different doctors and the only common suggestion is that I may have some muscular issue. TMJ has not been suggested but after reading these TMJ threads I’m starting to lean in that direction...but just not sure. I’m also going to try acupuncture soon.

Please let me know if you have any success finding a solution or some sort of relief!!

Suggestions anyone? Help! :dizzy:

Tom

Hi Everybody,

Recently, I am getting pain on the scalph, and its very sensitive to touch. In fact, yesterday was a challenge. I did not eat for a long time and went shopping and I was so hungry and tired and felt pains all over the scalph and the body.
Felt like I was hit with a baseball bat on my head or something...
I had to stop eat and had Motrin and it felt better after a while.

Now, I am getting ear pain in the left ear too and above and below the ear as well. (I has right ear symptoms for almost 6 months now) I have a TMJ dentist appt on the 29th of Nov. Got to see how it goes.

For the past one month, I was almost symptom free and did not even take Motrin. Then all of a sudden, everything started to hit back from the blue.
Imbalance, pains all over the head, jaw and the ear area, anxiety....etc

Lets keep praying and don't lose hope.
"Each day is a gift to be opened with prayer".

Thanks...
Paul
