The doctor called last evening with the lastest blood test results:
TC 209 (May '06 227)
Tri 74 (don't know for May)
HDL 77 (May '06 63)
LDL 117 (May '06 138)
He wants another blood test in 6 weeks and I'm not sure I'm going to do it. My only risk factors are a grandmother and uncle who had heart attacks in their 60's but both were diabetic as well and didn't take care of themselves.
I'm eating oatmeal with cinnamon every day and watching trans fats, saturated fats, etc., and exercising daily.
Thanks for any input.

Is your doctor wanting you to take statins with those kind of numbers? They look extremely good to me.

If U did that without any meds. U did a fine job. Give yourself a big pat on the back, looks mighty good to me. Your dr. sounds like mine, she was testing me every 2 months till I told her forget it. She knows I can't take cholesterol meds as I get sick from them, and I can't afford to be going for tests so often, so she backed off.
Best wishes and good luck........

My guess is that my doctor will want to put me on statins. He said if in 6 weeks the numbers stay the same "we'll talk about what we should do." He's prone to prescribe medications so I may not go for another test. I don't want to be on any of the statins and I don't think 209 is that bad. Guess the oatmeal and being careful has helped.

I'm no dr. but unless U have some kind of severe risk factors, those numbers should definitely NOT require meds. I have been eating the oatmeal, and also take a 1/2tsp. of cinnamon each morning, and I drink green tea. So far my numbers came down alot, but my dr. is a numbers freak, so if I am even above by 5 pts. she wants me on meds., but I told her no and explained the bad history I had with statins and even other cholesterol meds., so she has backed off.
Hubby had fairly high numbers, but I had him start on the oatmeal and cinnamon and his numbers dropped quite abit, so his dr. is a happy camper. He was on meds. for years, then he started having nasty side effects so he stopped. Even his cardio man told us, if the meds. ruin the quality of your life, U shouldn't be on them. Some people on this site would love to have your numbers, so I have no idea what your drs. problem is.
Have a good one, and best wishes.....

Your numbers are great! Don't let any doctor talk you into taking statins.

Thanks for all the input. I don't think I'm going to go for another blood test. I know posters on this board aren't doctors but most everyone seems to be more knowledgeable than a lot of the doctors around. As Ann Landers said in one of her columns years ago, "Half of the doctors and dentists in the United States graduated in the bottom half of their class."

greentree,
Your numbers are fine and do not require any treatment. Keep up the good work and congrats on that genetically high HDL...bet that grandmother and uncle didn't have the genes! :D

What in the world are you taking Lipitor for? Do you have CVD?

lj,
I read your past posts and see that you survived a heart attack by immediate angioplasty and stent. Good for you.
Yes, that LDL of 60 is precisely where you want to be. Keep it up.
What is remarkable is that you had a heart attack in the presence of such excellently high genetic HDL's.
Have you ever had your Lp(a) measured?

Yes I did -- i don't have the results in front of me but my cardiologist said it was normal. The doc's all say seeing someone like me (41, no risk factors, excellent physical condition and at ideal weight, no family history, never smoked, etc, etc) is something they see maybe happen 1 in a million (or very very rarely). Fortunately my prognosis is very good.

lj, I noticed you get PVC or what appears to be atrial fibrillation. Blockage from blood clots is always a possibility from this condition. Have your docs said anything about this? I still don't see why they have you on statins since you had no sign of blockage or artheriosclerosis. The usual treatment is anti-coagulants like asprin, not statins. I guess I would question the treatment more in your situation but then I'm a natural skeptic around doctors!!!!

I get PVC's occasionally... but not frequently. I started noticing them about 1 year ago. They usually only occur after eating or when lying down. Sometimes weeks go by without any. Anyway my doctors never mentioned anything about PVC's possibly causing clots.
They have me on coreg and lisinoprol (to help prevent any arthymia) as well as asprin, plavix and lipitor. Been on these for over 3 months. I don't notice any side effects. I'm an avid runner and biker so i exercise 30-60mins 5-6 days as week like clockwork. exercise always makes pvc's go away both during exercise and for sometime after (hours to days). My diet is heart healthy (always has been).
FWIW

lj, you might still ask your doc(s) about the clotting issues. Also co-incidental you had MI after you first noticed the PVCs ? Fish oil and asprin is noted in many studies to help.
