Below are ingredients for Hummus. Is this really health food? Is it high in cholsterol?

garlic, lemon juice, canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans), tahini, sea salt

Well, I looked it up because I didn't know what Tahini was. Apparently, it's a paste made from gound up sesame seeds.
It's 675 calories for a half cup. Around 19 grams of protein, almost 61 grams fat, 24 grams of carbs, 10 grams fiber, and no cholesterol.

The whole 14 oz can of chickpeas has around 457 calories, around 19 grams of protein, and about 86 grams of carbohydrate, almost 17 grams of fiber, and no cholesterol.

The garlic and lemon juice don't have any cholesterol either so if that's all you're concerned about, you're good. This stuff sounds yummy but fattening. Hopefully it makes a lot of very small servings. :D

Hummus is a wonderful source of delicious animal protein but it IS highish in fat and calories so not a dieter's dream. I even add about a Tbsp of olive oil and some extra toasted sesame seed oil to mine (2 cans of chickpeas at a time...that fills my Cuisineart.)

Of course, it MUST be eaten with hot pita bread.

It is also a great way to get COPIOUS amounts of soluble fiber...which is a delight to our colons.

You talked me into it...it will be dinner tomorrow.

i make a bit different sort of houmous, which i think should be lower in fat and i like it a lot more than real houmous.

the ingredients are:

a can of chickpeas
a few sundried tomatoes
2-3 teaspoons of oil from sundried tomatoes
some mayonnaise
basil, salt, pepper.

crush chickpeas with fork (not completely, still pieces and some whole chickpeas left), mix with remaining stuff and either wrap in tortilla or fill the baguette.

if you're concerned about fat, just use extra light mayonnaise and i think there's very little fat in there then.

sundaysun,

You don't know what you are missing by skipping the sesame seed paste (tahini.)

don't think i miss anything as i don't really feel flavour of sesame in real houmous:p
and you can always add it to "houmous" i make too!
