This may be old news that I am just coming upon, but I wanted to share something that has come to my attention. According to the latest studies, anyone who has nephritis due to lupus (not diabetes) should be considered a candidate for treatment with an ACE inhibitor. I have been reading article after article that all seem to conclude that ACE inhibitors are one of the best choices available to prevent and slow the progression of kidney disease toward end-stage disease and kidney failure. There seems to be some worry among doctors about elevated serum creatinine levels and something called hyperkalemia occuring with the use of these drugs, but according to the articles, these can be managed with some changes in diet, the addition of a diuretic, and avoidance of NSAID's. I was on an ACE inhibitor, and will be back on it again, but before now, didn't really understand the logic behind why this was beneficial to me. One often feels like one has so few acceptable choices for treatment of this disease, it is encouraging to get some positive reinforcement from time to time.
