View Full Version : Valtrex as Preventative for Cold Sores

A few years ago I had some laser resurfacing done around my lips, and the doctor gave me Valtrex to take for a few days before/after the procedure to guard against getting herpes/cold sores, which I guess are sometimes prevalent after this procedure, and which I am prone to. I only get it when I go out in the sun, or am stressed about an upcoming trip or event, or basically anything that requires me to look my best. I have a big reunion coming up and do not wish to have these things break out on my lips. Does anyone know if I could just take Valtrex prior to the event to stop a breakout? If so, how much and for how long. I think I still have about 6 of them left from when I had the laser work. I also was wondering about Lysine. What is the amount to take as a preventative? I have some that are 500 mg, but don't know how many to take.

100mg (2 pills) will do you just fine. Stay away from peanuts and caffeine if you do not want to have an outbreak.

PS. Popcorn and hotsauce also. Good Luck

Did you make a typo - You must mean 1000 mg right? The ones I have on hand are 500mg each; and I vaguely remember taking them once like candy trying to fend off an outbreak. 100mg doesn't seem like enough.
