View Full Version : kidney stint question

Hi, I had my first kidney stone blasted 2 weeks ago, it was 2cm, then had to have it reblasted today, because it didn't all break up. I had the stint put in the first time. I hate it! Anyway, I am having it removed on Tuesday. The doctor wants to put me to sleep. I don't want to. He said he can do a local but doesn't seem to really want to. My question is how painful is it? Are people usually put to sleep? Thanks so much for your help.

I have had two stents. I was put asleep to have both put in and taken out. I have read some people on here say that they are awake. Honestly, I would rather be put to sleep. If you doctor does it under local than you will not be all the way under but you surely won't feel anything.

Hey Traci

I see you had a 2 mm stone. How long did you give it to pass naturally? Seems the more I read on this thread it seems the more complications people have by having surgery/litho, etc. From infections, stent issues, to recurring pain it seems like doctors should give you plenty of time to pass a stone naturally given the risk/reward if there are no blockages, other complicating circumstances.

Most of my friends who have had stones gave them plenty of time to pass naturally with few complications. The one friend who had surgery had all sorts of trouble. I just passed a 4 mm stone which took about 11 weeks to pass. Whats interesting is our common bond is that we are athletes and I suspect that dehydration plays a role in stone formation to one degree or another.

Hope your situation resolves.

Robb, my stone was 2 cm not 2 mm, very large. There is no way I could of passed it. They blasted it the first time and it was so large they didn't get it all. The second time it was 6 to 7 mm. My stent isn't infected, I don't think. I have been on antibotics for preventing this. But, it does on and off feel like I have a urinary tract infection. I had it blasted the second time yesterday and was in a lot of pain this morning. Much more than the first time. I took a pain pill and cried myself to sleep. I can not wait until this is all over! I'm not athletic at all! Just the opppsite. I drink lots of diet cokes though, like 4 to 6 a day. I don't know how much that has to do with anything. But, I am now down to 1 to 2 a day. Trying to drink more water.

Hi Traci...I hope your 2nd lithotripsy works to get rid of your stones. I misread in that yours is 2 cm which is quite large as you say. Hopefully your feeling of UTI is due to the stone passing down into your bladder. Keep us posted on how your situation goes.

BTW I had been drinking a couple of sodas a day (now more water) and that may have something to do with stone formation. I get the results back from the lab in a couple of weeks so it will be interesting to see what it was made of.

Best wishes!

I have had my stent in since May 31st. It feels as if i have a constant UTI.
My urologist tells me that he can't take it out, as I have a 12mmx11mm stone
which did not break up during the lithotripsy I had May 31st. I cannot have another Lithotripsy due to the fact that I got a Hemotoma which contained about 2 pints of blood on the outside of my kidney from the Lithotripsy.
Just as soon as that blood goes away he can do surgery to get the stones out..........and then remove the stent! This stent is the worse thing I have ever had in my life, it hurts worse than passing a stone if you ask me!

I've only had one stent and was awake when the Urologist removed it in his office. It didn't really hurt when he pulled it out, but was embarrassing b/c it was right at eye level. I did feel like I was going to pee on him though and he was wearing a plastic apron. lol. I didn't even know that some people are put to sleep to have it removed. I was asleep when it was put in though. Good luck to you.

Well, I had the stent removd this morning. They made a big deal out of it though. I had go to the hospital for it. I didn't get put to sleep and I 'm glad I didn't. It didn't take that long to do, they did use a little numbing cream, though. It hurt a little bit but not bad. I have used the restroom like 3 times since and there are a ton of pieces of stones. Its like the stent was keeping them from coming out. I do have a UTI, so I am on antibiotics now.

I had a litho last July. Went to Ozzfest with the stent in! :dizzy:

Anyway, when the doctor removed the stent, it was in his office. It only took about 30 seconds, but it felt longer, and I thought I was going to break the table I was gripping it so hard. As soon as it was out I felt fine, and the doctor asked if I wanted to see it. He held it up like I had just given birth to it.

I wouldn't want to be sedated for it, as it is so quick and the pain is short lived.

BTW - I, too, passed a bunch of pieces after the stent was removed.

I have had stints removed before - fully awake and not even a local. It is quick and relatively painless. I was nervous when they removed it but there really was no need to be nervous.

I had a 5mmx10mm stone removed Tuesday. I too have a stint installed from my left kidney down into the bladder. I will have it removed Tuesday morning. I will post again after I get back from that. How do they retrieve the end of the stint? This concerns be...being a male.

when my hubby had a stent... he had a little piece of the material sticking out of.... well, you know where... then they told him to just pull it out on his own... and OMG.. he said it was so painful. He did it at home... he wondered why his doctor didnt want to see him to do it.. but it did come out... but painfully !

Have you all passed the stone remnants ? Do you get recurring stones ? How often ?

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to put in my 5 cents worth. I had 2 stents when I had my hysterectomy. One in each ureter (tubes from bladder to kidney). They were in about 4 - 6 weeks. They hurt like &$#@)*(, when the dr. pulled them out. It took quite a while and my husband was in there to hold my hand, shoulders or head. I was yelling and crying the whole time.

The were about 10 inches long, with a curly que on each end. I will never get another one put in, unless it is an emergency. And then it will be, me knocked out, and in outpatient in hospital!!!!!

Perhaps my uro dr. was not knowledgable about the stents?! But, I am requesting my file and paper work from his office and will take it to a kidney dr., if my family dr. will refer me.

Take care. I have never had a cyst in anything, but my ovaries, which are now gone!

Wannabe
