I have a prescription to take xanax on an as-needed basis, but I just ran out of it and cannot refill for another month. I do have an old prescrip for valium that I can take. I've read that taking 2 benzodiazapines at the same time can have serious side effects, even cause death. My question is, how long does xanax stay in your system, and when would it be safe to take valium? I took 1mg of xanax a few hours ago, and I will probably need to take something in the morning (maybe 7-8) hours from now. Any comments would be greatly appreciated ;)

You need professional advice for this; ask your pharmacist or doctor.
Some formulations are slow-release which often also means that they tend to accumulate in the body. So depending on what your dosage is; how long you've been taking it; and, how fast it normally clears, you may have to wait for a few days before switching over to another med.
