View Full Version : Is this a migraine?

About 7 months ago I started to get these headaches that were really bad.

They are usually on one side of my head.
They can last up to 4 days.
No over the counter drugs can prevent or stop them.
They usually occur around the time of my period.

I did some research and thought they could be menstrual headaches. But I don't know why they started out of nowhere. Some say it could be caused by birth control pills. But I have been on those for 7 years with no problems.

I also read where some migraines can be caused by ulcers. I think I have an ulcer because I am sick to my stomach often. I took ibuprofen A LOT for tension headaches. Ibuprofen is known to cause ulcers.

But some of the reasons why I am not sure if these are migraines or not...

I have no sensitivity to light or sound.
I have no auras (tho I know not all migraines do)
I don't normally get sick from the headache itself, only have twice and the headache was a terribly bad one both times.

Just wondering what other people think of this. And also want to know what kind of medicines are good to take. I've been given Midrin, but it did nothing for me. I've taken Fiorinal and saw no help in that either.

If you have not already done so, make an appointment to see a Neurologist that specializes in headaches/migraines. They are usually found at Headache Clinics. They will be able to help you and/or recommend the proper medications to control the migraines and/or headaches.

In the meantime, you should try to keep a headache diary. Click on the Health Guide tab above. In the search filed, type headache diary. You will be able to print out a diary as well as instructions as to how to use it.

Good luck!

Sploofable.... I was just wondering if you've made an appointment with a Neurologist that specializes in headaches and if you've come closer to finding out the cause/type of your headace.

I recently, 2 days ago, woke up with a severe headache located on my left side of my head behind my ear. It's a sharp pain stabbing pain that's been there constantly since Tuesday morning... pain's is triggered more with certain movements of my head/body... I went to my doctor yesterday. He said it could be either a migrane or congestion headache. I don't believe it's a migrane headache because I'm not sensitive to light or noise, no aura feelings...etc... I also don't think it's a congestion headache because I'm not congested... He did prescribe me Midrin, but it has done nothing for me, before I started taking that, I was taking 600mg motrin... still nothing.

Singlemommy, try taking two Advil Cold and Sinus, and inhale some steam with Vicks vaporub in it, see if they help... you can suffer sinus congestion without your nose feeling blocked.

If this doesnt help, you could try Jono's Special headache Remedy #1 -

Two Advil, Two Percogesic, and a cup of coffee.
