This would be a good question to ask on the depression board.

Have you asked you dr. about getting samples? Also, some companies have patient assistance programs for those having difficulties affording their meds. You would have to go through your dr. for that too.

Good luck,
Gail

hi,
Try buying the medicine from abroad. the generic prozac(fluxotine) is now available for around 65$ for 50 pills 20mg i think. or you may find the real brand cheaper. here the 14 tabs are around $25.
OR
consult a doctor, maybe if your depression isnt severe enough, you can substitute it with 5-htp supplements. 60 tabs of 100mg CAN be found for 12$ (usually retail for around 30$)
this, imo, is a better solution as it is natural and does not cause long term change/deformations to the serotonogenic systems and the 5-ht nuerons.

as always check your doctor, and check with another doctor if he cannot convince you.

good luck.

Sorry I know you wrote your post several months ago, so this is a bit after the fact. You shouldn't stop any mood altering drug cold turkey because in most cases you will experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, restlessness, fatigue, etc. You should always try to ween yourself gradually to lessen the side effects. Or if you can't afford prescription meds, you can ask your doctor about herbal alternatives like St. John's Wort, Kava Kava, Valerian Root, etc. Good luck, I know what it's like to lose your medical benefits and I agree it sucks...

LUVCAROSEL,
Prozac is now available in generic form and I am sure it is much CHEAPER, and the same thing. I am not sure exactly how much it costs, I have insurance and pay $5 for generic form drugs.
Hope this helps.

I was on 40mgs a day and I experienced headaches MAJOR MAJOR nausia (even thinking about eating made me want to puke) i had a very sensitive stomach, MAJOR tiredness and needed to pee a lot. You don't mention how long you were on the drug for, but my experiences are based on taking it for a year. smoke a little weed - it helps to combat the symtoms of withdrawal. Even if you're severely against drugs, you'd rather go against your morals than experience these symtoms as badly as I did!

I have had a lot of problems withdrawing from Prozac and Ativan. I tapered off for months on the Prozac and all the time suffered withdrawal symptoms. I did finally stop taking it alltogether about 3 weeks ago but am still sufering horribly with headaches, over all body aches and nausea. I have not been able to stop the Ativan completely and sometimes 2-3 times per week take a small dose to help me sleep. There is very little information about this and since Doctors get most of their info from the drug companies they are not much help. I constantly think about going back onto Prozac to stop my discomfort but am detrmined to be pill free. Good luck.

This is what I found when browsing the web about Prozac:

Prozac: Was tested for only 6 weeks prior to its introduction to the market. It is still uncertain how it impacts the body. Prozac is associated with more illness and death than any other FDA approved drug. The FDA employs only 54 people approving drugs.

The maker of prozac I believe it is the Lily company will give you a 6 month supply for free, ask your dr about it. I believe its for people without insurance. My sister is in Ohio and uses this program.
