Twice a day, I take Metoprolol (either 12.5mg or 25 mg depending on how I feel). I have been told that my heart itself if fine, but I have some sort of metabolic disorder that affects my heart. I am set to have an event monitor put on Monday (had one a few years ago). Whatever it is, I end up with palpitations and tachycardia. I live in Arizona, so the summers I tend to get worse with the heat. I just spent 5 days in the midwest where the temps were much cooler than at home, so really didn't have too much off a problem.
Today, I remembered I needed to take my medicine because I was feeling a little tachy after climbing the stairs, so I took 25mg. A few hours later after eating lunch, I was told that my lips were blue. It was a little cool in the restaurant, enough that I had goosebumps, but my hands really didn't feel cold--and they are frequently cold. I looked in the mirror and at least 50% of my lips were blue, I looked at my fingers and they looked a little dusky, but instead of being like an ice cube, they felt relatively normal.
I have never had my lips turn blue (except for last summer while having an asthma attack). My breathing was fine, so I know my asthma wasn't involved.
Curious what may have happened. I did not have any symptoms at the time--other than the blue lips. I'm not sure how long it lasted, as I put lipstick on to cover it a bit--the young kids that I was with noticed it first, so it was quite prominent...and I had not eaten anything that was "blue".

Hi Lani,

Blue lips have many causes. Almost all causes relate to an oxygen deficiency. Cyanosis, in addition to blue lips, can also be localized in the hands and fingers causing dark skin.

An oxygen debt can be due to respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis...an oxygen deficiency can be caused by a heart disorder.

Climbing the stairs may have burdened the heart's output supply of blood/oxygen to meet demand, eating lunch also demands more oxygen. A very fast heart beat will cause a blood/oxy deficit as the fast heart beat doesn't provide enough time to fill during the diastolic stage. Of course an abnormal metabolic condition can not be ruled out as the problem. There is a relationship with energy expenditure and the utilization of oxygen.
