I was wondering if anyone could offer some insight! I had a root canal on Tuesday (today is Sunday). This is the second root canal done on this tooth. The first one was done 10 years ago. This tooth had been bothering me last month. I went to the dentist, had x-rays and was told that there was another root. I was put on penicillian and made an appt. with the endodontist. I should say that the next day the pain was much better from taking the penicillian. I scheduled the appt to have the root canal. The tooth seemed to start bothering me a little again, but I wasn't too worried since I was getting the root canal done. Ok, back to Tuesday. Had the procedure. The endodontist told me that there was some infection and it looked like when the root canal was done 10 years ago that one of the canals was not filled! Huh??? Anyway, he said we will keep an eye on it and he will look at it in year. Well..... When the numbness started wearing of I felt some discomfort but I knew that was to be expected. The next day (wed.) was horrible. I called and they called in an antibiotic (klendomycin) and hydrocodone. I started throwing up (which I never do) - could not keep the antibiotic down. I called and they switched me to Penicillian. They told me to give it 48 hours, keep taking the pain medicine and it will subside. Well it is now sunday! I am in the same amount of pain, I have taken sooo many hydrocodone (thank God for a wonderful husband who helps out with the kids),missed 3 days of work and I am at my wits end. Has anyone had a similar situation???? Will this get better? The doc said he could put me on a steriod, but I don't want to do that! should I have it pulled? Is all the pain worth it. I worry about my teeth shifting if I pull it. I know that I am rambling - Sorry! Any advice would be much appreciated!

It sounds like this tooth is giving you more grief than anything else. I'd pull the tooth if I were you. It is too far gone in my opinion. Get rid of it and get rid of the infection. You can always get a bridge or implant tooth.

Some times when an infected tooth has a root canal done, as the dentist files out all the infected pulp, some of it gets pushed into the underlying tissue, called the PDL space. When this happens, it can cause a "flare-up". Very painful, but it should resolve before too long. Keep in touch with your dentist.

I feel for you I had a root canal done on my front tooth and then had to have it redone 4 years later around christmas time, the first root canal I had no pain with I even went on vacation with it half done but the second one I thought I was going to die it hurt so bad I even thought my dentist was a quack so I called two other dentist for a second and third opinion because nothing helped the pain pills or anbesol or anything except if I put ice on it I was literally in tears for 3 days and nights but eventually it did go away but to this day it still gets achy I have no idea what caused that to happen.
