Hi, I was just reading through old posts and came across one of yours. I read that you had mono as a teen and have had eczema all of your life. I too had mono as a teen and had very severe eczema (especially on my face) all my life. Dr's have never been able (or willing?) to get my skin under control and I am always in a lot of pain. I can't sweat or cry or go in saltwater because it feels like acid on my skin. The steroid creams are too strong to put on my eyes and mouth (where it's worst.) I was just diagnosed with MS on Wednesday. I am still in shock. The first thing that came to mind when I heard it was an autoimmune disease was: I wonder if there is a connection to the eczema? By the way, a study in England a couple months ago found out the people with eczema are missing a gene, so I don't know where that leaves us. Then when I started reading out MS treatments the second thing that came to mind was: I wonder if MS treatments also help the eczema? What has been your experience with this?

Hi-

I don't know about the link with eczema, but I'm wondering about a link with mono (epstein barr virus). Do you know if there is a link with mono?

Hi Lostifound. Sorry for the delay in reply. I've not noticed my skin improving at all. I've been on Avonex premixed, Betaseron, and now I'm on Avonex that I have to mix myself. Still have Super Duper Dry flakey, gross aligator like skin. Oh man do I know what you mean about that salt water thing. BUT, when I was younger and we moved to FLA for a summer, my doc told my Mom that Salt water is one of natures best things. It burns at first if your skin is dry and cracked getting in, but if you moisturize getting in and out, it will REALLY help your skin. It helped mine quite a bit. It's part of the reason I don't have a bunch of scars from scratching when I was little. My Mom used to leave me to play in the water for a while because it would help heal up the sores. Then rinse me off and put lotion on me and I'd be good for another week.

Now, I've had exzema since I was a toddler. I was in the hospital in a "plastic bubble" type of a crib because mine was so bad at that time they had never seen a case so bad they didn't know what to do with me. I was in and out of the children's hospital for like the first 3 years of my life until they could find a way to help me and stop the exzema from spreading on my body. They did refer to it as an immune disorder even way back then. Late 60's early 70's. So it is possible that there may be a link. Hmmmmm, good question, I've often wondered that myself.

Googling can be very frustrating. As I mentioned in another post, it is best to visit the National MS Society web site. THere is all sorts of information and it will say where you nearest chapter is. Everything is free!
