Hello!

I've been lurking here for a little while now as my husband and I have recently decided that we would like to TTC some time within the next year. We are both 26 and have been married for 2 years. Hubby has a good job and I've been a nanny for a beatiful little boy since he was 8 weeks old. There are some things that we would like to achieve before we start trying for a baby (finishing renovations to our home, travelling a bit more etc...)

Anyway, I have a few questions that I'm hoping some of you ladies can help to answer for me.

One strange question I have is if its ok to have braces while you're pregnant? This might seem silly, but I'm in the early stages of consulting with an ortho about having braces put on this fall. I know that pregnancy can cause some dental issues and I'm curious if this could be a problem? I know that I'm going to have braces for the next 2 years.

I'm currently taking Olay women's multivitamins. Its has 100% of my daily value of folic acid. Is this ok, or should I be thinking about a prenatal?

At what point before we actively start trying should I consult with my gyno?

Anything you ladies can share would be greatly appreciated. You all seem to have a great amount of knowledge about the journey ahead of us.

Thanks and good luck to all of you :)

Hi there, welcome to the board:wave:
just want to start by saying how fantastic everyone here is, their support and encouragement has been unbelieveable, So this is a great board to be on!
Im not 100% sure about some of the questions you asked,im sure some of the other ladies on here can help you out with those. I didnt personally consult a gyno before i started trying, but i know that is something that some ladies like to do.
just wanted to welcome you!
wishing you lots of baby dust!~

Welcome to the board!! I am a dental assistant, I have not worked in ortho but my thought would be that it is probably not a great idea to get ortho if you are planniong on becoming pregnant only because of the x-rays. The ortho will want to moniter your progress with x-rays and if you happen to be prego when he wants to do this it may make things a little bit difficult. As far a having the actual brackets on that wouldn't be a problem if you made sure to keep them clean. So I would say to either have the ortho and then get prego or vice versa. I also think that it wouldn't hurt to start a prenatal before you ttc. I don't know that it is really importat unless you are not a healthy eater but a little extra folic acid and calcium would probably be a good idea. Good luck!!

Being pregnant does cause most women's gums to bleed easily -- not sure if that will impact braces.

The vitamins you are taking should be fine since they have folic acid. Perhpas when you finish your current supply you could switch to prenatals. Prenatals are fine to take even if you are not pregnant.

Some women like to visit their gyn for a pre-conception check-up. My advice is to talk to your gyn during your annual pap and let him/her know that you are planning to TTC this year. Some women like to update their vaccinations before TTC, as some vaccinations are dangerous to update during pregnancy. I know rubella is one of these. You generally update these at least 3 months before TTC.

If you are currently taking birth control, it's a good idea to stop taking it about 3 months before you want to start trying. Use other protection in the mean time. ;)

Best wishes to you!!
