My brother has had a problem with this(uncontrollable bowels) for quite some time.He has episodes to where he cannot hold his bowels and has literally went on himself and was so bad the other day he had to pull over and go in the woods. He has even went on himself in front of family members in the car..so clearly this isn't soemthing he can control.Does anyone know what can be done to rectify this or what he can do to help this?Should he see a Dr.?Please let me know ASAP! Thanks!

Hi LC,
All sorts of things can contribute to this problem, from stress, to food intolerances, to diseases mild & serious, to lifestyle choices. What's gonna help is gonna vary depending on the cause. If it's enough of a problem for your brother, of course he should see a doctor. If he doesn't get help with a family doctor, he should see a gastroenterologist -- gut specialist.

Best wishes.

I'm new here, but I can tell you this has happened to me three times since December '02. It scared the heck outta me. I think the times I had it may have had to do with an intestinal "bug." On the other hand, I've been under a lot of stress. As always, an M.D. can (hopefully!) diagnose the problem effectively. On the other hand, that is not always the case.

I only speak from my own experience, and I have had it so bad it was like trying to stop a locomotive with a toothpick!!! I did find that taking "diet" aids such as meal-replacement beverages and pills to block cortisol really contributed to near-uncontrollable bowels.

Having a thyroid disfunction may also trigger increased bowel movements and may have frequent accidents. please check up on that
