I have had three abnormal paps in 18 mo and all came back HPV negative. I have another one Sep. 1. What could be causing this, and should my doctor being doing something else besides having me come in every 3 mo.?

The next step for me after having 2 abnormal pap smears was to have a colposcopy. This is where the doctor can look at the cells of your cervix in more detail to see why the pap smears are abnormal.

If they find anything not quite right, they may take a biopsy or carry out treatment there and then such as a freezing/burning treatment or a leep/loop.

Your doctor may be asking you to come back every three months in hope that the problem will recify itself but to put your mind at rest, I would ask about the colposcopy.
