I had a root canal done on a tooth 9 years ago (upper right; last tooth in back). For the past 2 weeks, I have developed an abcess on the roof of my mouth, caused by a bad root in the tooth that had the root canal. My options were to see a root canal specialist; who would attempt to do a procedure that wasn't guaranteed and obviously, would cost $$$$. The second (and cheaper) option is to have the root canal tooth extracted. Needless to say, I chose the cheaper option!
My question.....has anyone had a root canal tooth extracted? Is it any more difficult than having a regular tooth extracted? I have not had either procedure done.....this is my first time at having a tooth pulled by my dentist. Can anyone share their experiences with this?
Thanks so much!

I had a root canal tooth on my lower jaw, back molar. I never had a crown put on it and the tooth broke off on the gum line. I decided to get the tooth pulled. A root canal tooth is no different than a regular tooth when it comes to pulling it out. It wasn't a big deal at all. It only took 2 minutes to get it out. I was in a bit of pain after but I just took regular Ibuprofin and was fine.
Make sure you get some antibiotics if you have an infection.

I already did one round of anti-biotics and the abcess did not go away. Just started a different type (Kefflex?) for one week. It's odd because the abscess in on the roof of my mouth.....away from the gumline. The inner root of the root canal is the suspected problem (has a post in it and is deteriorating).

I just had a root canal tooth removed a few days ago. It really is no different from a regular tooth. I too am on antibiotics.
