I had my cholesterol checked about 4 weeks ago, and I'm just now getting the results back, which are the following:
Total Cholesterol: 207
Tryglicerides: 157
HDL: 36
LDL: 140
Do I have to go on meds for this? I'm only 28 and I don't want to go on a cholesterol drug this young... Any advice? Please help. Thanks.

Try diet and exercise first. You're not that far off acceptable.

Drink one 6oz glass of red wine or grape juice every day and or take 1200mgs of a Fish Oil or Flaxseed Oil tablet everyday. Both the wine and the Fish Oil brought my numbers way down. I also eat high fiber breakfast cereal every morning and I have lessened my saturated fat intake. Losing some weight also helps. Good luck to you. :)

Storm Moon,
Yep, your numbers are not good. You have a TC/HDL ratio of 5.75 which should be <4.0. This is caused by both your triglycerides and LDL being high, but not terribly so and amplified by your HDL being low.
If you were older, I'd say consider a statin, but at 28 try your damdest to get the numbers in line without drugs.
The old saws:
Lower Fat to <30% of calories (<20% is better to lower cholesterol), and keep your saturated fats to <10 grams
High Fiber...beans, peas, lentils, grains, rough vegetables, etc.
NO trans-fats (hydrogenated vegetable oils)
Lower your weight to average or below
EXERCISE HARD
Eat FISH frequently
Limit sugars and alcohol (both mess with triglycerides).
Drink booze every day :D (but keep to 3 drinks or less)..good for HDL
Get your weight to normal or slightly below.
(Now you see why so many people take statins instead. :D:D:D)

great advice Lenin. The DASH diet is a good place to start. It will lower your cholesterol, triglycerides and your BP.;)

Thanks all. I will definitely try this. I have already decided to cut sweets now, especially chocolate. When this test was done, I was addicted to it and couldn't stop eating it. I had to have at least one candy bar every day, and was also eating ice cream like crazy lol. Plus I just wasn't really getting the vegetables I needed. I eat a lot of breads and pasta, so that could be another reason too.

Cholesterol 339
Tri 271
HDL 47
LDL 238
VLDL 54
Liver
SGOT 41
SGPT 52
Today's Results (went to the doc)
Cholesterol 317
Tri 422
HDL (Cannot calculate levels with Triglycerides reporting >400)
LDL (Cannot calculate levels with Triglycerides reporting >400)
VLDL (Cannot calculate levels with Triglycerides reporting >400)
to make a long story short
I started with 339 and worked my butt off to get it down as far as i could. I didnt want a Statin. Slowed the drinking of alcohol and soda, cut back the calories to lose some weight, cut the bad fat to lose some points and I only managed a 22 point in total cholesterol.
The Doc prescribed me 80mg Zocor. Its hereditary I have concluded. COnsider yourself lucky. :)

mooler,
They should have at least gotten an HDL reading the last time because that is directly measured even in the preseence of extremely high triglycerides.
You MIGHT be able to get good numbers with half a pill...40 mg. Give it a shot. It cuts your costs in half because both pilles cost the same.

Yeouch mooler, I hope you get those numbers down soon. You seem to be making good progress.
Lenin, I've started taking Garlic just recently. Should that help get the numbers down for me? I'm considering the Fish oil too.

Garlic is a good food, moon...but don't look for too much help with cholesterol numbers with it.
