Tripp has these seizures where his head turns left...eyes turn left, too. They last less than 10 seconds...sometimes just 2 seconds. Neruo calls them complex particals. She says these do not hurt his brain. What do you think? OH...and he goes on about his business as if nothing happened. Today he a couple while we were at the dentist he was waiting on them to call him. They said he did fine while getting his tooth filled.
Can't seem to find a med that will stop these!!
He had a grandmal seizure the 6th of this month and one the 6th of July(we were adjusting meds at that time)
He is currently on Tegretol xr 400 mg 3 times daily and Keppra 1500 gm morning and 1250 gm at night
THANKS!!

I've got complex partials, and I usually am tired and sleep afterwards, but my sleeping after seizures is deeper than what is in the 'books' - everybody different is my theory.... I've always heard that any seizure can effect the kindling effect in the brain and make seizures more possible due to the brain getting used to the abnormal electrical activity, and almost making a path for the seizures. Some people don't get control of all seizures- if Tripp is going on about his business afterwards, that's a plus- but I'd still wonder if they're simple partials- is he aware of it happening?

Thanks for replying!! Trpp does seem aware of them AFTER I can not sure he does before them as he is almost non-verbal. He will say after them "I am okay"

That's actually better than going into a complex partial= he's aware of what's happened...with the CPS I have, I recognize the aura, then waking up- but zippo during the seizure. I'll know when I wake up I've had a seizure, but I definitely don't keep doing what I was doing- I have to sleep....

Short periods of staring, or "blanking out" spells are non-convulsive seizures called absence or petit mal. They only last a few seconds and are most often seen in children. A child having this kind of seizure is momentarily completely unaware of people and things around him or her, but quickly returns to full consciousness without falling or loss of muscle control. Some children will stumble and fall if they have this kind of seizure while running around at play. These little seizures happen so quickly that the child (and sometimes other people around him or her) may not notice that anything has happened. Often parents and teachers think the child is being inattentive or is daydreaming. Sometimes these seizures also produce blinking or chewing movements, turning of the head, or waving of the arms.
THIS IS WHAT TRIPP DOES
The turning of the head...sometimes he has fallen. AND he is not a child.

But he's aware something happened- absence seizures are generally followed with no awareness by the child- they pick up conversations where they left them off; I know Tripp isnt' a child. But for him to say "I'm ok" indicates to me that he's aware of something having happened. jmho. I've seen kids have absence seizures- they just keep going without reassuring those around them, or saying they're ok.....

My son was first diagnosed with complex partcial and his doctors said that they do not hurt the brain. His last EEG showed that he has petite mall. He has been on 9 different meds and nothing seems to get rid of them. I dread going to the dentist with Tyler because he gets himself so worked up that he has clusters of seizures.

This is OT from Tripps topic, but for the dental question...
If you are worried about the dental they can administer Nitrous to relax patients. Check with your Neuro FIRST and see if that is an acceptable concept if an epileptic tends to stress out at a dentist and go into seizures to avoid problems.
It may or may be covered by the coverage you have, so that cost may come out of pocket.

Hi! My daughter is 15 months and has been having seizures every 5 days- to the day. Her seizure's are exactly like Tripps, eyes and head moving towards the left and sometimes it's just a blank stare for 20 seconds. She always sleeps for about 2 hours afterwards. I am weaning her off Topomax right now bbc it has not done anything for her seizures. She is on Phenobarb and clobozam as well.

How are the overall intensity of the seizures with the recent med changes? Like the night siezures, GM, etc....maybe this is sort of a trade off for the worse ones- and as much as you want them ALL gone, maybe he's still settling into the med regime (weren't there recent changes of all sorts?). Sometimes it just takes time....also, if the weather has been nuts where you are, that can' t help. just some ideas. I'm sorry you're all going through alll of this.
